Let’s talk “Squid Game” – that Netflix sensation with a whopping 111 million viewers in just the first month. It’s like boom, instant success. And you know how it goes in Hollywood – hit equals another season or sequel. Well, guess what? Season two is officially in the oven, baking and all.
The creator, Hwang Dong Hyuk, spilled the beans first, mentioning to the Associated Press that he’s deep into the planning for the next season. He didn’t give away too much, but he did drop the bomb that our man, Gi Hun, is making a comeback. And then, Netflix bigwig Ted Sarandos spilled the tea in an interview, basically saying, “Yep, it’s happening. The ‘Squid Game’ universe has just begun.” Cue the excitement!
Oh, and did you catch the teaser for the new season? We got a sneak peek at that giant animatronic doll. Things are about to get really interesting!
From the very start of Squid Game, the old man is shown as someone who is a mysterious person. He was despised by everyone, except for Seong Gi-hun, because of his old age.
Despite his old age weakness and brain cancer, the old man was very intelligent and could easily calculate the results of most of the games. He was able to help the team to win this grudge match.
For most viewers of Squid Game, the show is a moment of shock and sadness. The old man is one of the most interesting characters in the show. Most of the viewers cried when he appeared to give himself up in order to save Gi-hun.
Who is the Old Man in Squid Game?
Squid Game has become Netflix’s latest smash hit, with the Korean-language survival drama set to become the streaming service’s most-watched show of all time.
The nine-part series ends with a shocking twist, in which Seong Gi-hun discovers his ‘ganbu’ Oh Il-nam never died during the marbles round in the Game.
In the show’s season grand final, it is revealed that the old man or ‘No. 001’ (his name Yeong-su Oh) is the one who created the whole concept behind the deadly games. As one of the show’s highly beloved characters, the reveal shocked and disappointed audiences around the world.
While millions of viewers have been left blindsided by this twist, Oh Il-nam’s true identity was actually peppered throughout the series, with writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk leaving us a breadcrumb trail for us to uncover his true identity.
His real nomenclature is revealed to be Oh Il-nam, and he created the game basically for “amusement and entertainment” (via The Cinemaholic).
The character also reveals that he is extremely rich and was at a point in his life where he became bored. Having everything he wanted to do not leave him happy, so he came up with the game to have some “fun.”
Speaking to his equally rich clients who were just as bored as the old man himself, he created the fierce Squid Game both to please himself and his clients, who betted against one another for thrills.
Here are all the hints you may have missed that pointed to Squid Game’s big reveal.
He’s Player 001
As we learned at the beginning of the Squid Game, every player’s number is determined by when they were chosen to play the game – meaning that Oh Il-nam was “picked” first. While the other 455 players are all juniors and struggling financially, we still do not know about Oh Il-nam and how he will find himself in the game. This is the first sign that everything is about in this situation it may not be as good as it looks.
Oh, Il-nam’s name translates to “first man” in Korean – a first sign that he is a creator or a “first” person in the games he chooses.
What Will Happen in His Final Episode with Gi-hun?
As was the case with Mi-nyeo, Il-nam was not completely eliminated after the marble round. Gi-hun returns to the outside world with a large amount of income and buys a rose with a note that leads him to an address in downtown Seoul.
When we got to the high-rise building, it was almost empty except for a hospital bed in the right corner. As he approached the bed, he realized that the figure lying on the ground facing the city was Il-nam.
Later, Il-nam tells Gi-hun that the drunken man will die in the snow on the street below. He decided in the middle of the night that no one would stop to help a stranger.
At the same time, he explains to Gi-hun that he is not really a competitor but that he is the master of the competition. Describing how his riches oppressed him and cut him off from human experience, Il-nam said the motivation behind his grueling competitions was to make a living for himself and his wealthy friends. Its customers are called VIPs.
Disgusted by the old man’s words, Gi-hun turned to the street below and held back tears. He later learned that a woman passed a drunken man on the street before going to call the police, who arrived at midnight. Gi-hun turns to face Il-Nam, but it’s too late: he’s dead. Gi-hun asks the old man if he saw him, hoping to see his kindness before he passes out.
