I hope everyone remembers the 2018 Yellowstone series that premiered on Paramount+. If not, here’s a little something to jog your memory. Yellowstone focuses on the Dutton family and their family drama, along with the conflicts with the neighboring ranches.
Now paramount+ is bringing another prequel after 1883 named 1923. In fact, it already aired on 18th December 2022, with Episode 2 on the way. 1923 is the latest in the universe of Yellowstone and will be focused on the generation of the Dutton family after James Dutton.
This generation of the Dutton family is headed by Jacob Dutton and Cara Dutton. Now the biggest question for the fans was who exactly is Jacob Dutton? and where does he fit in the Dutton family. But most importantly, what’s the connection between Jacob and John Dutton?
If you are following the whole series till now, you must have noticed that there are a lot of Duttons. And rightly so, cause you to know the show is based on and revolves around them. So if you follow the timeline, In 1883, the Yellowstone ranch was founded by James and Margaret Dutton.
Then in 1923, we see a generation of the Duttons headed by Jacob and Cara Dutton. And finally, following them in Yellowstone, where after the death of Lee Dutton, Beth and John Takes up charge of the ranch.
Who are John and Jacob Dutton?
Before moving to establish a connection between the two, it’s good to establish who the two Duttons actually are. So, following the family timeline, the first is Jacob Dutton. Now Jacob Dutton is first introduced in the prequel of Yellowstone “1923”. More importantly, Jacob is the brother of James Dutton, who takes up charge of the ranch after James’s death. Also seen in one of the flashbacks of Yellowstone season 4. More precisely, he is the brother of both James and Claire Dutton.
On the other hand, John Dutton is someone who we all have seen in every show set in the universe, be it Yellowstone, 1883, or even 1923 episode 1. He is the son of James and Margaret Dutton. Later on, John marries Emma and has a son Jack Dutton. then comes John Dutton ll (Son of Jack Dutton), and eventually, John Dutton lll (Son of John Dutton ll) Takes up the business at the ranch.
What’s The Connection Between Them?
Based on the family tree information we have gone through, the connection is pretty much clear. James and Jacob were brothers. John Dutton Sr is the son of James, making Jacob his uncle and John his nephew.
After the death of James, when Jacob became the head of the Dutton ranch, he took John under him. The aim was to teach him everything so that he would be ready for the day when Jacob was not around anymore. In short, John, as we saw in 1923, shares an Uncle-Nephew relationship with Jacob.
Further, the John we meet in Yellowstone is actually John Dutton lll. So if we track backward from him, John becomes his great-great-granduncle. Since James was his great-great-grandfather, I guess you have to be good in those Blood relation questions, plus you must have watched the whole series, including the prequel.

John Dutton Sr appeared in 1883 as well as 1923. And played by different actors. In the series paramount origin story 1883, Audie Rick plays the character of young John Dutton Sr.
In the latest prequel of Yellowstone “1923,” James Badge Dale plays portrays the character of John Dutton Sr. We Also saw amazing performances from Tim McGraw as James Dutton & Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton in 1883. And Harris Ford as Jacob Dutton.
