The gut-wrenching finale took fans by surprise.
As Elsa painfully succumbs to the infection, she makes one last wish of her to be picked where she will be buried, and James and Margaret decide to settle on whichever land Elsa chooses.

While talking about Elsa’s death, the 1883 executive producer David Glasser opened up about the shocking episode, titled “This Is Not Your Heaven,” which was written by the series showrunner, Taylor Sheridan.
Glasser admitted that he didn’t think Elsa was going to die until about two minutes before she did, and he kept thinking how Elsa is probably crucial to the Dutton family tree, and there was no way the makers were going to kill off the narrator and the main character.
Faith Hill Talks About Elsa’s Death in 1883
Faith Hill, who plays the role of a Dutton matriarch Margaret opened up about her on-screen daughter’s poignant death scene and how it was emotionally painful for the actors as well.
While talking about the role, Faith Hill states that she can only speak as Margaret because she cannot even imagine, and she doesn’t even allow herself those thoughts as a mother. Faith Hill herself has three daughters with her husband and her 1883 co-star Tim McGraw.
The actress further admitted that the most difficult thing for Margaret is to not be next to her child during any type of suffering, especially death, as fans have been taken by surprise as the makers have killed off one of the most crucial characters.
