Season 1 of Creature Commandos wrapped up with Episode 7, titled “A Very Funny Monster,” leaving fans with a mix of twists and turns. The finale not only had incredible moments but also revealed the ultimate fate of several characters. As the story concluded, it was clear that the show had set up several threads for potential future seasons, including connections to the larger DC Universe (DCU). But what exactly happened, and how does it all lead to what’s next? Let’s go into the Creature Commandos season finale and break it all down for you.

Creature Commandos Ending Explained

By the end of Season 1, the truth about Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova) is undeniable—she’s the villain. Earlier in the series, Circe (Anya Chalotra) had a vision that predicted Ilana would wreak havoc on the DC Universe. As improbable as it may seem, this vision is proven to be accurate. However, some viewers might still be scratching their heads over the finer details of the finale, so let’s take a closer look.

The Complex Plan Unraveled

Ilana’s plan is convoluted but essential for her quest to control the DC Universe. Throughout the finale, The Bride (Indira Varma), Doctor Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), and Weasel (Sean Gunn) set out to eliminate Ilana, believing they are doing the right thing. However, once Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) wakes from his coma and reveals that Themyscira professor MacPherson (Stephanie Beatriz) has been replaced by Clayface (Tudyk), things take a turn. The team then stands down, making it clear that their initial mission was misguided.

Ilana’s deception is revealed—she seduced Flag Sr. to manipulate him into killing Circe for her, using his loneliness and desire for companionship. However, Flag Sr. proved to be a man of integrity and instead captured Circe. Meanwhile, MacPherson, who was still alive and knowledgeable about Themyscira, played a crucial role in Ilana’s downfall. Ilana had orchestrated a scheme to confuse everyone by having Clayface impersonate MacPherson. But The Bride ultimately unravels the entire plot and confronts Ilana.

The Bride’s Decision and the Consequences

It turns out that Ilana’s ultimate goal was to create chaos and destroy the world. The Bride, however, had a personal reason for taking action against her—Ilana had killed Nina, The Bride’s only friend. This betrayal leads The Bride to make the difficult decision to kill Ilana. Despite the convoluted nature of the plot, this moment was crucial, as it marks the end of Ilana’s reign of terror.

Following Ilana’s death, The Bride is offered a new team of Creature Commandos by John Economos (Steve Agee) and Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). This new team consists of Weasel, Doctor Phosphorus, a rebuilt G.I. Robot (also voiced by Sean Gunn), Nosferatu, Khalis (a mummy-like villain), and King Shark (voiced by Diedrich Bader). The Bride, always one for dark humor, agrees to lead the new group, setting up a potential new chapter for the team.

The Underlying Themes and Confusion

The finale raises some questions about the show’s thematic direction. Earlier episodes explored toxic masculinity through Circe’s leadership of the Sons of Themyscira (SofT) and their attempt to take over an all-female island. However, by the end of the season, this theme takes a backseat, with Ilana’s personal motivations becoming the primary focus. The resolution of Ilana’s arc seemed disconnected from the earlier plotlines about masculinity, leaving some viewers questioning whether the show’s thematic direction was fully realized.

Furthermore, with Nina’s death and The Bride’s seemingly sudden shift in motivations, the story’s progression feels a bit muddled. It’s unclear why certain characters, like Frankenstein (David Harbour), are written off so abruptly. The finale focuses on action and plot resolution, but it leaves behind a sense of missed opportunities in terms of thematic depth and character development.

The Post-Credits Scene: A Twist on Frankenstein’s Fate

Just when you think the story is over, Creature Commandos throws in one final twist. In the post-credits scene, we see Eric Frankenstein alive and being cared for by another elderly woman. His feelings for The Bride remain unchanged, and he continues to express his obsession with her. The scene ends on a humorous note when he comments on the soup he’s being fed, a quirky touch that leaves the audience with one last laugh. However, the scene doesn’t necessarily advance the plot significantly, acting more as a lighthearted and bizarre way to conclude the season.

What’s Next for Creature Commandos?

The show’s ending sets up a potential Season 2, which was confirmed by Max on December 23, 2024. Although the core team of Commandos has changed, it seems likely that the next mission will feature The Bride at the helm, alongside characters like Weasel, G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, Nosferata, Khalis, and King Shark. However, the production timeline for animated series is typically long, and with so many projects lined up in the DCU, it could take until 2026 before a new season of Creature Commandos hits screens.

Creature Commandos and the DCU Connection

While Creature Commandos works as its own story, it also sets up the broader DC Universe. The inclusion of the Creature Commandos paves the way for their appearance in live-action films or additional animated series within the DCU. One notable character, Rick Flag Sr., will return in both Peacemaker Season 2 and the upcoming Superman film. His fate following the events of Creature Commandos is still uncertain, and his role within the larger DCU remains to be seen.

Several plot points raised in Creature Commandos could influence future DCU storylines. For example, Clayface seems to meet his demise in the finale, but there’s always the possibility that the character could return in another form, especially with the upcoming Mike Flanagan Clayface movie. Additionally, Circe’s vision, which depicted Ilana causing a global apocalypse, featured Gorilla Grodd, a well-known villain from The Flash. This intriguing connection could hint at future crossover events.

Another plot thread that could be explored in future DCU projects is Dr. Will Magnus, who was introduced in the G.I. Robot episode. His work on creating the Metal Men, a group of superheroes, could be revisited in the future. Fans can likely expect to see more of Dr. Magnus and his creations in subsequent seasons or films.

The Wonder Woman Mystery

Perhaps the most significant unanswered question involves Wonder Woman and Themyscira. Throughout the season, there were hints of connections to Wonder Woman’s world, including references to her helmet and Circe’s past. Despite these allusions, Wonder Woman herself remains absent. With the DCU’s focus on Superman and Batman, it’s unclear when, or if, Wonder Woman will make her return. This is a glaring hole in the story that fans are eager to see filled.

Final Thoughts: A Rollercoaster of Plot Twists and Future Potential

The Creature Commandos Season 1 finale is a rollercoaster of action, confusion, and unexpected developments. While some of the plot elements may have left fans scratching their heads, there’s no denying the potential for future stories in the DC Universe. The show has set up various threads that can be explored in future seasons or larger DCU projects. With Season 2 confirmed and numerous unanswered questions, the Creature Commandos saga is far from over. Fans will be eagerly awaiting what comes next, hoping for a more cohesive and satisfying continuation of the story.
