Darrell Ward, a beloved driver on the History Channel’s Ice Road Truckers, tragically passed away in a plane crash near Missoula, Montana. He was 52 years old at the time of his death. According to the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Ward was piloting a single-engine Cessna 182 when the crash occurred. The plane went down as he was approaching Rock Creek Airport, where he was heading to film a new documentary-style show on recovering plane wrecks. His co-pilot, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, also died in the crash.
The crash occurred along the south shoulder of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 near the Rock Creek exit. After the impact, the plane caught fire. The flight had originated from Dallas, Texas, where Ward and his co-pilot had attended the Great American Truck Show. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the incident.
Ward became a prominent figure on Ice Road Truckers starting in 2012, joining the show during its sixth season. He quickly became a fan favorite for his fearless approach to the perilous ice roads and his ability to help his fellow drivers, even those who were his competitors. The show’s producers confirmed his death in a Facebook post, revealing that he had recently wrapped up filming for the 10th season and had been informed that a new season, initially set to begin filming in 2017, had been green-lit.
Ice Road Truckers, which debuted in 2007, chronicles the lives of truck drivers guiding hazardous, seasonal routes across frozen lakes and rivers in remote regions of Alaska and Canada. Ward was known for his bravery and skill, as well as his kindness to others in the industry. The producers mentioned that when Ward wasn’t working on the ice roads, he was back in Montana, working as a log hauler and occasionally assisting local authorities with forest fire fighting efforts.
The Facebook tribute also highlighted Ward’s active role in charity work, such as promoting a food drive to aid Louisiana flood victims. He was also set to be the grand marshal for the Truck Convoy for Special Olympics in Nova Scotia. Ward, who considered himself an “adrenaline junkie,” enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, camping, and dirt bike riding.
Ward’s death has left a void in the Ice Road Truckers community, and fans remember him for his courage, generosity, and passion for life. Funeral arrangements are currently pending.
