Pearl Abyss has doubled down on its long-term plans for Crimson Desert, confirming that updates will continue for as long as players remain engaged. The statement, delivered during an interview at Summer Game Fest, highlights the studio’s strategy to maintain player interest through consistent post-launch content rather than traditional marketing pushes. As the game continues to evolve following a mixed critical reception, the developer’s commitment signals a clear focus on community-driven growth.
The approach reflects Pearl Abyss’ experience with live-service models, particularly from its work on Black Desert Online. While Crimson Desert is positioned as a premium title, its post-launch support is being handled more like an ongoing service, with frequent updates aimed at refining gameplay and expanding content.
“As Long as There’s Demand”: Devs Outline Long-Term Strategy
Speaking to Dexerto, Will Powers, PR and Marketing Director at Pearl Abyss, made the studio’s stance clear.
“We will keep updating the game as long as there’s demand for it,”
he said, emphasizing that player engagement will directly shape the game’s future. This quote has quickly become central to the conversation around Crimson Desert, as it reinforces the idea that the game’s lifespan depends heavily on its community.
Powers explained that the strategy is not just about adding content, but about maintaining visibility and relevance.
“If I want to promote the game, a great way to do that is to have a sustained player base and constantly be high up on the Steam charts,”
he noted. This perspective frames ongoing updates as both a player-focused initiative and a marketing tool, blending engagement with long-term visibility.
Unlike many single-player titles that receive limited updates after release, Crimson Desert is being treated more like a live ecosystem. Powers described this as
“a model that gamers aren’t used to,”
pointing out that consistent free updates for a premium game are still relatively uncommon. Instead of investing heavily in advertising, the studio is channeling resources into content development.
“Having continued support and continued content both rewards your community… as well as doing free marketing,”
he explained. This approach shifts the focus away from traditional promotional campaigns and toward player retention. By regularly adding new features, the game stays relevant without relying solely on external marketing efforts.

Community at the Core of Development
One of the most notable aspects of Pearl Abyss’ messaging is its emphasis on the player community. Powers underscored this by directly linking the company’s success to its audience.
“Without the community, there is no Black Desert. Without Black Desert, there is no Crimson Desert,”
he said, highlighting the interconnected nature of the studio’s projects.
He went even further, adding,
“We live and die by our fans,”
a statement that encapsulates the company’s philosophy. This quote has resonated strongly within the gaming community, as it positions players not just as consumers but as essential contributors to the game’s longevity. The idea of “paying back the community directly” through free updates reinforces this relationship.
