Beginning in 2024, The Tourist, the BBC’s most-watched drama of 2022, returns with a new setting that is completely different from the original and a few familiar names. Jamie Dornan’s character, Irish car crash survivor Elliot Stanley, suffered from amnesia in the first season of the six-part thriller, with his past slowly catching up with his present.
The scorching, dry, dusty red terrain of the Australian Outback, where the series is set, was crucial to both the mood and the plot. As Elliott’s past is revealed, writers and executive producers Jack and Harry Williams picked a whole different setting this time around.
Exactly two years after the first series ended, the second season of The Tourist debuted on BBC One at 9 PM on New Year’s Day. The second episode of BBC One will premiere on Tuesday, January 2, at 9 PM and will air every Sunday from January 7 to January 28, at 9 PM BBC iPlayer currently has the entire season available.
The second season of The Tourist brought everything to a close with a ton of suspenseful moments and revelations. There was even a surprising surprise at the end that might have left some viewers wondering why certain things happened.
Filming Locations
With the assistance of his girlfriend Helen, played by Danielle Macdonald, Elliot is attempting to learn more about his heritage, and the action has moved from Australia to Ireland. Although Danielle and Jamie appeared together in the first series, a lot of new characters appear as the focus shifts to the Emerald Isle.
The Wicklow Mountains, County Wicklow, and Dublin served as the main filming locations. Speaking about his time spent filming in Ireland, Dornan exclaimed, “It’s amazing.” “On our first day of filming, we were in Kilpedder, Wicklow, and as I was strolling through the trees, the heaviest rain I had ever seen hit, and I realized that this is what it’s like to film in Ireland,” the actor said.
Irish grace, I kind of forgot that I hadn’t shot here in three or four years. He said he was able to explore parts of Ireland that he had never been to before because the show was set there. Dornan was born and reared in Northern Ireland.
And he went on, We got to show off how stunning Ireland is, but we also took a quick detour from Wicklow and Dublin, where much of the shoot was done. It has been a pleasure to work with an Irish crew that shares a similar sense of humor.
It has been an absolute dream to stage here. The Tourist was supposed to be a stand-alone six-part series, but due to its success, a second run was requested. The second season’s deliberate scene change to Ireland was done to provide a new perspective for a new plot.
Executive producer and writer Jack Williams stated, “We loved how it looked and felt, and our director [Chris Sweeney] did such a good job. While obviously, we wanted it to have a lot in common with that, it is a new country, it’s a new story.” “Visually, series one was very distinct,” Williams added.
Ireland is a lush, wet nation, but it is extremely different from the Australian Outback. We’ve been attempting to maintain the highly cinematic vibe of the first season by obtaining some expansive, wide-angle landscape pictures and figuring out a sensibility that works for the second season.
The Irish setting presented Dornan, who also assumed the role of executive producer for this season, with an opportunity to capitalize on the fascination that many people have in Ireland.
He stated, “I’ve been traveling pretty much everywhere since leaving Ireland 22 years ago, and I find there’s a real intrigue with Ireland. People are just fascinated by Ireland, and I feel like everybody has a bit of a love for the place and the people.”
We’re showing off Ireland in a huge way with a ton of Irish talent and some amusing Irish people, so hopefully, it will be extremely appealing.
The father of three also acknowledged that by choosing to film the show in Ireland rather than Australia, he was able to keep his family put for several months while the show was being filmed. “Selfishly, I thought it was a good thing not to have to move my entire family again,” he remarked.
