What is Cowboy Bebop anime about?
Cowboy Bebop is a popular anime that follows the lives of a group of bounty hunters and their entourage, with the classic exception of Spike Spiegel and Jet Black. The series takes place in the far future. Thanks to that, we are able to see all sorts of futuristic elements like AI, cybernetics, and space colonization. This anime series was created by Shinichiro Watanabe in 1998. It’s known for being a quite enjoyable series, offering quality animation and storylines. Cowboy Bebop is one of the most famous anime series in history. With its mix of action, drama, suspense, and comedy, it has something for everyone.
The characters from Cowboy Bepop are very well developed and help keep the audience interested in the show for years to come. Let’s see the top 9 characters from Cowboy Bebop ranked by popularity, likability, and many other aspects. The list is solely for entertainment purposes only and may differ from person to person.
Here we shall rank some of the best characters from Cowboy Bebop:
9. Faye Valentine
Starting the list with Faye Valentine, she is one of the most iconic characters in Cowboy Bebop. She has a selfish, no-nonsense personality and often avoids getting involved in other people’s problems. Faye is introduced into the series as an experienced bounty hunter. She quickly develops a strong relationship with Spike Spiegel, who she eventually falls for. She gets herself into many problems throughout the series but manages to get out of them with her intelligence and wit.
She’s a con artist who was cryogenically frozen for sixty years before she joined up with Spike and Jet on the Bebop. She has no memory of her life before she was frozen. But she does remember that she was a very good con artist. She’s very smart and has a great sense of humor. She ranks the lowest on the list because of her selfishness.
8. Vicious
Vicious was a former Red Dragon crime boss who was in charge of the entire Red Dragon Syndicate on Mars until he was betrayed by his own partner, Julia, and his buddy Spike Spiegel. He is the main antagonist of Cowboy Bebop, and he was a very memorable character despite only appearing in 3 episodes.
Vicious had no real weaknesses except for his arrogance which led to his downfall at the end of Season 1. Vicious’s strengths were his intelligence, ruthlessness, fighting skills, leadership skills, charisma, and overall personality traits, which made him a very memorable and popular anime character.
7. Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV
For obvious reasons, Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV is also known as “Ed.” She’s a brilliant hacker with childish tendencies, though she does have an excuse in the form of being a child herself. She prefers to use her technological knowledge to her advantage, but she does have times when she can be of great assistance to the Cowboy Bepop crew. She’s also the only other person who knows how to use technology besides Ein.
Ed shows genuine concern for others, treating them as if they were members of her own family. She named satellite “MPU” out of pity because she is a tech-savvy and caring person. She is compassionate towards her crew, but she prioritizes herself among them. She’s a slacker who uses her crew members for experiments that she could conduct herself. She’s intelligent and caring, but her sense of self-importance sometimes gets the best of her.
6. Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener
Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener is also known as Gren for obvious reasons. During the war, he was Vicious’s partner as well as a war victim. Vicious and Gren were close friends, and Vicious entrusted him with his music box. During the war, they were inseparable, but shortly after the war ended, he was accused of being a spy and sentenced to three years in prison. As a result, he harbored a great deal of resentment toward his former colleague.
In an attempt to assassinate Vicious, he accidentally killed the wrong person. He killed a misguided man despite his justified frustration and desire for vengeance. Regardless, Gren was not a bad individual. He was a musician and a generous man who aided the Bepop Crew on numerous occasions. He is on the list because he is extremely likable.
5. Ein
Who’s a good boy than a dog, huh? Ein is a genetically enhanced Doberman Pinscher. He was used as an experiment for the military and was eventually abandoned in space. He has a very good relationship with Spike, and the two often work together in dangerous situations. Ein is a very loyal character, and he will do anything to protect his friends.
He is one of the most unique characters I’ve ever seen in anime. He’s a super cool dog that can talk, but he also has some human traits that make him interesting to watch. Ein is one of my favorite characters from Cowboy Bebop, and I’m glad that he’s on this list!
4. Anastasia
Anastasia, also known as Annie to many, she’s a local woman who has her own convenience store, and occasionally she chases off the thieves from her store. She’s an old friend of Spike, helping him out greatly each time that he visits her store.
She was willing to help out Spike after he showed up three years after he was presumed dead. She gives him all the information he needs as well as the material goods from her personal stock. She also conceals any information regarding Spike and Julia when her store is ambushed by men from the syndicate. It shows that she is a great character and has loyalty towards her friends.
3. Laughing Bull
Laughing Bull is a primeval man who seems to make his living by giving advice to the crew of the Bebop. He also takes care of his son. Laughing Bull is very accurate in his prediction, although his terms are really unfamiliar, which results in difficulty understanding his predictions.
He is a spiritual man that cares for not only the people who are around him but also shares great respect for all living beings. He also saved Spike after his fight with Vincent. He pulled Spike from the river and took care of his wounds as well. He is the kindest and most compassionate of the Cowboy Bebop crew.
2. Jet Black
Jet is Spike’s partner and captain of the Bebop. He was once a member of the Red Dragon Syndicate, but he left when his friend was killed by Vicious, another former Red Dragon member. Jet is very tough on Spike sometimes, but he does it because he cares about him. He is also an excellent pilot and has an incredible knowledge of weapons. He is a former ISSP officer, and he is a bounty hunter. He’s also a very intelligent man who has extensive knowledge of weapons and martial arts.
Jet was born on Mars, but he was raised on Earth. His parents were killed when he was young, so he became a police officer to find the killer. However, after the killer was found, Jet left the force because he didn’t want to be an accessory to corruption in the ISSP. Jet is one of my favorite characters from Cowboy Bebop because he’s cool and collected, but at the same time, he’s extremely funny. The way that he talks is hilarious, and his facial expressions are priceless. He has a very interesting backstory as well; I won’t spoil anything for you, though!
1. Spike Spiegel
Many take into account Cowboy Bebop’s lead character to be one of the greatest characters of all time, and therefore one only needs to watch the show to see how his alluring charm and laid-back personality make him one of the series’ highlights. When it comes to Cowboy Bebop, the iconic Spike Spiegel is the one who comes to mind as the epitome of power and presence. Spike is an incredibly cool character, and there are many reasons why he’s ranked number one on this list.
First of all, he’s the protagonist of the anime. Yes, call me a nerd of the main characters, but I absolutely love them, and he’s extremely handsome. His hair is always perfectly styled with gel. He’s also very tall (6’2), which makes him stand out from the other characters in the series.
Spike also has a mysterious past that we learn about throughout the series, but I won’t spoil it for you! His personality is very interesting as well. He has a lot of depth to him that you don’t see in most anime characters. While definitely vain and edgy, Spike is also a very thoughtful man with a heart of gold who can humble the best of them. For example, whenever Jet wanted to act like an idiot, Spike was the one who calmed him down.
