Recap
“I was on ‘The Voice’ previously!” The blind auditions continued in episode 2. Donny Van Slee has joined Team Reba. Gabriel Goes and Maddi Jane joined Team Chance. Karen Waldrup joined Team Dan + Shay. OK3, Nathan Chester, and Gene Taylor joined Team Legend. Let’s keep the blinds going!
Bryan Olesen, a 49-year-old former Christian band guitarist, opened the third round of blind auditions by performing a rendition of “Love Runs Out,” recognizing that he was the oldest competitor of the season. John, Dan, and Reba all pressed their buttons to place their bids for Bryan after just one line of his performance.
Frank Garcia’s “Love in the Dark” was the next performer to wow the coaches. Before pressing their button simultaneously, Dan and Shay decided that they both wanted him. No other team challenged them after that.
Chance was shocked to learn that the coaches’ singing and speaking voices belonged to completely different registers when Frank spoke to them. Shay chastised the other coaches for not turning their seats, while Dan was thrilled that Frank took a chance and sang an Adele song.
Kamalei Kawa’a, a Hawaiian homestead dweller, sang a rendition of “Redemption Song,” a song that reminds him of the struggle for independence, to honor his indigenous heritage. Chance stepped in right away to cover for Kamalei, but late in the song
Next up was Atlantan Ten, 37, who was trying out for “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops)” in the hopes of landing “the next big opportunity” to advance her career. Sadly, none of the coaches were able to swivel their chairs for her, but they did provide guidance for her future development.
Chance claimed to have a “cool take” on the song, but that he was “slowed down” in his appreciation of it after hearing it “in a new way.” John went on to say that she was behind it throughout her performance since there is “a lot of lyric to squeeze out.”
Madison Curbelo, who had previously tried out for season 20 but was not selected for the program, gave the last audition of the evening. She followed Blake Shelton’s advise and started working the circuit, doing gigs, and has since completed her studies at Berklee.
She won John over with her rendition of “Stand by Me” right away tonight, and when Dan + Shay, Chance, and Reba joined the fray, it became a four-chair turn. She “did a beautiful job,” according to Reba, on the tune. Her voice “has this brightness to it,” John said, adding that he “loves [her] story” and that she’s “ready now.” She “radiates light and joy,” according to Shay, and her voice is “flawless.”
