Since its premiere, Netflix’s hit series The Night Agent has quickly become one of the most-watched shows on the streaming platform. After breaking records with its first season, the show was swiftly renewed for a second and third season.
The second season will be released on January 23, 2025, which has excited many fans. If you haven’t yet seen the series, now is the perfect time to watch all 10 episodes of Season 1 on Netflix. If you are already familiar with the show but need a quick reminder, here are some of the key moments from Season 1 that will help you get ready for the new season.
The Night Agent was created by Shawn Ryan and is based on the book of the same name by Matthew Quirk. The show follows Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso, who is a low-level FBI agent. Before joining the White House, Peter saved many people’s lives when he stopped a bombing on a train.
His heroic actions led to him getting a new position in the White House basement, where his job is to monitor an emergency hotline. The hotline rarely rings, and Peter spends most of his time doing nothing. But one night, everything changes when he receives a phone call that will turn his life upside down.
Peter’s life takes a huge turn after one phone call in The Night Agent
While working his night shift in the basement of the White House, Peter answers a phone call from Rose Larkin, played by Luciane Buchanan. Rose is a tech entrepreneur who has just learned that her aunt and uncle were government operatives.
They were murdered by assassins, but before they died, they told her to call this hotline. Rose is now running from the same assassins who are trying to kill her. She has no one else to trust, so she reaches out to Peter for help. Peter immediately decides to help her and vows to keep her safe.
Peter is then instructed by his boss, Diane Farr, played by Hong Chau, who is the Chief of Staff in the White House, to take Rose to a safe house. Peter and Rose start to travel together, and Peter explains to Rose that her aunt and uncle are part of the Night Agent program.
This program is a secret operation within the U.S. government that handles critical emergencies and national security issues. Rose also tells Peter that before her aunt and uncle died, they warned her about someone in the White House who could not be trusted.
As Peter and Rose make their way to the safe house, they are chased by assassins who are trying to kill them. Peter now has to keep both himself and Rose alive while also trying to uncover the truth behind a huge conspiracy.
Peter and Rose uncover a huge conspiracy that reaches the highest levels of the White House
Peter and Rose quickly discover that the murder of her aunt and uncle is part of a much bigger plot. This plot involves high-ranking officials in the White House, and they learn that the bombing Peter stopped on the train was not just an ordinary terrorist attack.
In fact, the bombing was part of a plan to assassinate Omar Zadar, played by Adam Tsekhman, a controversial political figure from another country.
Zadar was supposed to be in a café above the train tunnel when the bomb went off. The bombing failed, and the assassins now have to change their plans and go after someone even more important: President Michelle Travers, played by Kari Matchett.
President Travers was willing to work with Zadar, but her Vice President, Ashley Redfield, played by Christopher Shyer, believed that Zadar could not be trusted. They are both involved in the plan to kill Zadar.
Along with Gordon Wick, a businessman played by Ben Cotton, who profited from Zadar’s political rival, they all had a role in the assassination plot.
When the bombing fails, they switch their focus and target President Travers. As Peter and Rose continue to investigate, they make a shocking discovery. They learn that Diane Farr, Peter’s boss, is the mole in the White House who has been helping cover up the conspiracy. This revelation is a devastating blow for Peter, who trusted Farr more than anyone else.
While Farr was not involved in the original bombing plan, she was brought in later by Redfield to assist with the cover-up. She reluctantly agrees to help, as she wants to protect the President, who she has been friends with for many years. Farr tries to stop Peter and Rose at every turn. She even frames Peter for kidnapping Maddie Redfield, the Vice President’s daughter, in an attempt to stop their investigation.
Peter and Rose’s investigation finally leads them to a dangerous confrontation in the Season 1 finale. While at Camp David, Peter uncovers Redfield’s plan to assassinate President Travers. In a thrilling and action-packed scene, Peter rushes to warn the President before she steps onto Marine One, the helicopter that would take her away.
He grabs her and tells her that the helicopter is set to explode as soon as it lifts off. The security team doesn’t believe him, but when the helicopter explodes, Peter’s warning is proven to be true. Diane Farr is shot in the chaos, but she survives, thanks to Rose, who says she will help Farr get her name cleared in public, along with clearing Peter’s name in the process.
President Travers, grateful for Peter’s bravery, offers him a new opportunity to join the Night Agent program in the field. She explains that the Night Agent program operates all over the world, which means Peter will leave the White House basement and Washington, D.C., to work on missions abroad.
This new job will take him on a completely different path. Peter is torn, though, because he has grown close to Rose, and the two have developed a romantic relationship.
In the season’s final scene, the two say goodbye at an airport. They promise to stay in touch, but Peter has to leave for his new mission. His exact mission and location remain unknown, but viewers can expect to learn more in Season 2.
In the final episode, Peter also experiences significant personal growth. Throughout the season, he has struggled with the fact that his father was a disgraced former FBI agent who was accused of treason. Peter’s father was killed in a car crash before he could prove his innocence.
Peter has been trying to understand what really happened. President Travers shows Peter a video confession made by his father before he died. In the confession, Peter’s father admits to betraying his country, which deeply hurts Peter. However, Travers explains that his father was actually a double agent.
His confession was part of a plan to spy for the government, but the plan went wrong, and a foreign assassin killed him before he could finish the mission.
Now that Peter knows the truth about his father, he may want to investigate further in Season 2. This new information could lead him down dangerous paths. Fans are also hoping to see justice served for Diane Farr and for Peter to work closely with other Night Agents in the future.
There have been several exciting casting announcements for Season 2, along with a teaser trailer that has gotten fans even more excited. With Season 2 releasing in just over a month, anticipation is building for what’s next.
