Continuing on with the long-established Star Wars universe, the show, The Mandalorian, is based on the same franchise after the events of the Return of the Jedi occurred, and the film was released in 1983. Season three of the show launched its first episode on March 1st, 2023, and very recently, it wrapped its finale on April 19th, 2023, thus bringing this season to an end.
The Mandalorian has actor Pedro Pascal in the role of the Mandalorian alongside Grogu, the fictional baby Yoda. The show maintained a wide recurring cast, but these two remain the show’s focal point throughout. The Mandalorian is a show about the same being a fugitive hunter on his way to Mandalore to redeem himself of past crimes.
His journey is accompanied by the baby Yoda, his adopted son, and Bo-Katan Kryze, a fellow Mandalorian. Season three of the show continues with the journey of the Mandalorian and his adopted son, Grogu, while also addressing all the story arcs, the foundation of which was laid in the show’s second season. The show released a total of eight episodes for this season and managed to garner overall positive reviews from both fans and critics.
A fourth season for the show has been confirmed and is in development and will soon lead forward the beloved universe’s storyline.
The Mandalorian Season 3 Ending Explained
Season 3 of the show wrapped up with a happy ending for the most part, at least for the Mandalorian and Grogu. The last episode of the show was titled “Chapter 24: The Return,” and it finally brought some sense of calm in the lives of the two fugitives. And it feels much deserved, too, considering the bumpy journey of the two throughout this season, fighting pirates, cyborgs, and all kinds of imaginable threats.
When nearing the end of this season, the makers brought in Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito, the antagonist who wanted the Mandalorians dead. He put up a good fight against the two, Din Djarin or the Mandalorian and Bo-Katan Kryze, but he failed to kill them, and the two managed to survive once again.
So, the finale picks up from the battle scene with Bo-Katan at war with Moff Gideon in order to protect Mandalore. Moff Gideon seems fully prepared with the extra support he brought in for his troops. Din Djarin was captured by the latter and, in the meantime, was trying to find ways to escape. Grogu lends Din Djarin a hand, and the two escape, deciding to completely get rid of Gideon.
In previous battles, Moff has proven to be an opponent one needs to be careful of, and this fear comes true when both father and son come across a science lab facility that is crowded with clones of the Moff. But Din Djarin has no patience for Moff’s tactics, so he floods the entire facility, and Moff confirms later that his clones have been killed before they can even step out.
The Final Face-off
Din Djarin finally meets, and the two get into a heated battle while the two are fighting; bo-katan comes to help with the Darksaber in her hand. Just as we feel that the battle would now over, Moff manages to crush the Darksaber into pieces and reveals the Dark Trooper armor he had been wearing. Clearly, the man’s prepared for this.
But just as it starts feeling that the war would end with Moff’s victory, the tables get turned, completely taking aback everyone. Another Mandalorian ship crashes into their fighting base crushing the entire existing world around the four. A crash as big as this is likely to create a fiery around and kill everyone involved, but once again, Grogu came to Bo-Katan and Din Djarin’s rescue.
Grogu manages to protect the two and himself with a powerful shield that he creates around them, protecting them from damage and fire. But even with his powerful armor and useless clones, Moff is rendered completely incapable of saving himself from the crash and most likely ends up dying because of the fire.
But again, his death was not shown on the screen, and we are only assuming that he died because the fire and damage around him were immense. Though it is impossible to be completely sure, this is the Star Wars universe after all; surely, the makers will find a way to resurrect him. It also has to be noted that his clones may have been rendered useless by Din Djarin, but they might make a comeback, too, in place of the actual Moff.
Even so, killing off Moff is a big deal, and this moment calls for a celebration or at least some moments of peace before another problem pops up. We see Bo-Katan take her rightful place as the leader of the Mandalore, even though she lost her Darksaber when Moff crushed it into pieces during the war. She vows to guide her people toward the relighting of the Great Forge.
New Beginnings
While she has taken her position as the ruler of Mandalore on the one hand, Din Djarin and Grogu get on another journey on the other. This time he takes the latter to Living Waters, a place where he finds the Armorer, played by Emily Swallow, where he officially announces that he wishes to take Grogu as an apprentice, not wanting the latter to be just some lost and found property anymore.
The Armorer argues and pushes that Grogu might be a bit too young to be anyone’s apprentice and also points out the fact he can barely speak. But it is clear that the Mandalorian has made up his mind about the apprentice matter as he also pushes back, asking if his parents agree to it, then Grogu could become his apprentice without any problem.
An extremely wholesome moment commences when the Armorer points out that Grogu’s parents cannot be found anywhere, and Din Djarin almost takes it as an insult to himself and goes into full dad-mode and blurts out that in the case that Grogu’s parents cannot be found, he will adopt Grogu officially as his own son.
This is where the moment of peace commences for the new father-son duo, with Din Djarin making things as official as possible in terms of their relationship and even naming his son Din Grogu. Grogu finally has a place where he belongs and is now a Mandalorian, just like his father. The two are sent away from the Living Waters for future adventures.
The two decide to take up small odd jobs to continue their living and will work for the New Republic and also help protect the Outer Realm. The finale ends with the two going back to their small cabin-like living space, where the two will continue on with their lives and where Din Grogu can fly as many little frogs as he wants, while Din Djarin will continue on with the fatherly duties that he takes so seriously.
With the way the show has ended and wrapped up storylines, fans know that this is not the end, but it very much feels like so. This season ended too peacefully for the duo of Din Djarin and his son, Grogu, and as much as we would not want to break that for the two, it is only right to question what the producers have in store for the next season.
The makers of the show revealed that the story and outline for the fourth season got done long ago, and all that is left is writing the story for each episode. This has raised both the expectations and curiosity among fans who cannot wait for the next season.
Future Ventures
With the finale of this season, the producers wrapped up the story of the Mandalorian and Grogu well enough, the two are in peace, and Grogu will be receiving training from his father. It seems like their story arc has come to an end, and the two might not be the main focus of season four of the show. Fans also noted that their storyline might be intertwined with that of a show under the same franchise, Ahsoka.
In one of the older episodes, it was revealed that Ahsoka was aware of the Mandalorian and that she knew that if she ever needed their help, she could call for the two. So their story might continue on in that show and some part of this one as well. As it is, The Mandalorian has quite a few story arcs and plotlines that it could indulge in for the next season.
We are convinced that Moff Gideon is not completely out of the picture, and there is also the fact that Bo-Katan just became a ruler of Mandalore and had a lot on her plate too. Whatever directions the makers of the show go in, fans will surely wait for the next season with excitement and thrill.
