We see in episode 9 that as Yuuhi prepares for battle, he digs pitfall traps in the forest. Akitani Inatika claimed he had gained omniscience 500 years ago and began teaching apprentices who later died of old age. He discovered a package in one hole. Inatika claimed to have been born 500 years ago and gained omniscience.
A few years later, he trained Yukimachi and Subaru, whom he foresaw as his final apprentices. Despite losing his omniscience, he acquired the title Swordfish Knight and his swordfish partner Zan-Qamar after eight years of training them. Yukimachi and Subaru received his final lesson from him, and Yuuhi found the biography, and he died that day fighting a golem.
The Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer Episode 9 Review
This episode was quite enjoyable, and I found the master’s story rather sad. The blessing of immortality is a curse when you watch all the people you love and care deeply die around you. This episode covers chapters 28 & 29, which I think conveys the theme for the entire manga better than anything else: enjoy the mundane things in life and get over yourself.
There is no explicit indication of the master’s power, but it’s implied here that, before he lost his powers, he was about as powerful as Animus (if not more, considering he had omniscience, which Animus still finds himself lacking), but what differentiates them the most is how they approach their supernatural abilities.
He even singles out Shimaki as the knight most similar to him due to their shared desire for knowledge (he uses his powers to proclaim himself a god and even defines himself through his desire for learning), but the master reflects on his limitless knowledge and power and finds them lacking when compared to the value of companionship and simple life experiences. In his youth, the master believed himself to be godlike, but after training his first disciple, he realized how joy could only be found in nourishing others and being fed by them, and felt nothing but humility as a result.

Animus and Yukimachi encountered the master last episode, and no matter how powerful he became, he always saw himself as just a person. A kindred spirit who became conceited without learning to value the company of others, Animus is a kindred spirit which the master passes down to his last disciples and is his hope Animus will learn from him. Samidare and Yuuhi need to learn this lesson as well, even though they don’t realize it, the edgelords all need to get over themselves. It’s worth noting that the basic theme of Hoshi no Samidare was written 100 years before Mob Psycho: a simple, fulfilling life surrounded by individuals you care about is more essential than godlike superpowers.
