Julian Fellowes, the same man who created Downton Abbey, teamed up with HBO a couple of years ago to create a project that will sort of recreate Downtown Abbey in 19th Century New York City, that’s The Gilded Age, now on its second season amidst rumors of cancelation.
With a huge ensemble cast that includes Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Cynthia Nixon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, and Taissa Farmiga, this is a story about New Yorkers, their families, and their wealth. We see how people who have had money and power and control the social elite in the city clash with the up-and-coming burgeoning entrepreneurs of the Industrial Revolution era with lots of money to spend wishing to make themselves a niche within the Big Apple.
Recap
The debut episode of the sophomore episode came back with a punch. It had a lot of plotlines to its vast ensemble cast that we need to unpack. So, let’s begin with some interesting things. Remember Oscar? The closeted gay dude whose mom has plans for him, but the man to marry?
Well, he gets one drink too many, gets an insinuation by a man at a bar, and gets the living daylights kicked out of him. That was the last straw for those gay adventures for Oscar van Rhijn, and now he wants to marry a woman.
Who’s that woman? Gladys Russell, poor thing, she doesn’t know what’s coming her way. Oscar is gay, and she will be the door of that closet. Gladys, on the other hand, wants to be out of Mrs. Russell’s household to start her own and considers marrying Oscar.
We move to Mrs. Russell, aka New Money New York. Poor Mrs. Russell wants to get herself accepted into the elite of the burgeoning Big Apple and buys a big house in Newport so she can compete with the Astor’s. Her oldest son is an architect and is in charge of renewing the place. She will kick things off with a grand party. Mrs. Russell’s inferiority complex is evident, and she feels like she needs to be more grandiose than the rest in a nuevo-riche sort of way.
Keeping up with the Russells, Mr. Russell has had the debut season a few problems with his railroad business; now, some workers want to unionize, and that simply cannot happen. So he goes out to bust those ungrateful workers the same way Jeff Bezos would’ve if he lived in the 19th Century: By playing them against each other and killing them.
Moving away from the Russells, we move to Marion, who finds out that Mr. Raikes tied the knot with Mr.s Bingham. Marion is heartbroken because she puts two and two together and realizes that Mr. Raikes was a social climber who used his contacts to get t in touch with the high society. Once he finds a woman better than Marion, he ditches Marion and Marries her.
Marion’s cousin Dashiell will move to the Big Apple, a handsome widower. He’ll likely be the next target for that heartbroken Marion, and Agnes will surely have something to say about that.
