The story follows Rust, a young guy who works in an Association of different alchemists. He is an expert in research, more specifically in “Basic Research,” but the importance of this was unknown to the current President of the Association, who was also a former government official. This was the reason why he neglected the importance of the department and reduced its budget.
This was not all; he also made Rust transmute all the basic materials of the basic research department to be useful in other departments. To make matters worst, eventually, the President reduced his budget for the basic research department to zero and ordered him to disband it.
On the same day of the department’s disbanded, Rust gets an invitation from an old friend from academy days, who wants him to come over and help him to develop a new dominion in the borderland for her. Considering the recent condition of the department, and seeing no future with it, Rust decides to quit the job.
The main character of the story, Rust, that we are talking about is not an ordinary young man, he is one of the greatest alchemists that ever existed on the planet earth. During his time with the Alchemist Association, he transmuted basic materials into some of the rarest and most priceless forms, that could be found anywhere else.
Considering the rarity of these items, they develop many gaps in the Association, and when Rust leaves, his department cause a huge mess.

A recent chapter of the manga opens up with the President, who thinks that every mess that is happening is only because of Rust. Then we see Sabasa giving him a letter, according to which apparently there are old-style magic crystals going around, and not a few but a lot of them.
But this was not easy for him to accept, as imports are completely blocked, although he knew that someone was smuggling some in a very less quantity. He also believes that whoever is smuggling them must be part of the Association, and it is an internal issue.
In the Communication Room at the Alchemist Association, we saw him, announcing that if one of the Association’s alchemists betrayed them like this, he had been thrown out on the spot and an unlicenced Alchemist shouldn’t be skilled enough to do that.
On the other hand, we saw Sabasa telling him that their clients are returning new-style magic crystals left and right, and if this goes on, they are going to end up with a lot of dead stock. He also adds that although they managed to recover some amount of dead stocks still they are deep in the red.
After knowing this President gets furious and thinks that if that really happens then he then has to go and ask Rust to come back and rejoin the Association, but he also definitely never wants to do that.
