The Eminence In Shadow is a reincarnation isekai, as the concept is quite similar to that of the other isekai. A student is hit by a truck and wakes up in a new world with memories of his previous life. If you enjoyed the Overlord anime, you’d certainly love the main character in this series as well.
The unique aspect of this story is that Cid Kagenou, the main character, had a past life that was actually pretty fascinating. He was the kind of guy who was so consumed with the Chunibyo drive to become a hero that he lived his life in pursuit of it. He would practice different combat techniques on himself before going out at night to perform them on real criminals.
Dealing with all kinds of crimes then leads to gangsters and other hazardous individuals. This was not to relish in the joy of being this masked vigilante but rather to fulfill a desire to become a hero capable of defeating anything with forces so great that not even a nuke could beat him.
When confronted with his human flaws, Kagenou becomes determined to go to any length to overcome them, including unknowingly jumping in front of a truck in search of the magic. He is then reborn in a world where magic is literally attainable. Kagenou realizes that he is now capable of achieving the goal he has always desired.
The group Kagenou creates in order to become the Eminence in Shadow is named “Shadow Garden”, and it fights against the so-called imaginary Cult of Diablos, both of which Cid created in order to recruit people to his cause. But the problem with this made-up story is that the cult is not as made-up as he had expected it to be.
Cid hasn’t yet realized that this Cult actually exists, but the rest of Shadow Garden is aware of them as their constant enemies. Cid plays along when a group member came to inform him on the activities of the Cult they are up against but he just finds it amusing. However, in reality, they are engaged in battle with this wicked organization, whose influence extends over the region.
The Eminence In Shadow Episode 17 Recap
The episode starts with Cid’s friend showing up and banging on his door to talk about an offer that might give them 10 million zeni only if anyone finds President Rose from the student council and brings her alive, but when he notices his sister coming to meet him in his place, he immediately flees from the window.
While walking on the city streets, Cid suddenly hears piano playing and remembers his past life when he was forced to learn piano as part of his family’s education policy, which he thought was a waste of time; instead, he could have trained himself to become the Eminence in Shadow.
But now he thinks it wasn’t that bad that he learned piano, as everyone around him starts to give him attention and tries to keep a friendly relationship. So now he wants to play the piano in the light of the moon. It will show the world that he’s not just pure power but also a fantastic artist.
The song he heard was Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 14, but he couldn’t believe a piece like that could exist in this world or that it could be someone who had been reincarnated like him. Then he saw Epsilon playing those notes, and he was disappointed because all the Shadow Gardens were becoming famous one by one.
As Cid was walking down the hallway, he noticed a grand piano and planned something, but after that, we see that Alexia and Beta were looking for Rose, and Alexia was right about Perv Asshat working with the Cult. Then we see Rose Oriana, who got her answers to the situation she found herself in.
When Rose sees her father and the meet-up with Perv Asshat, she immediately knows something is up with her father, and her fiance Asshat is most likely the one who is manipulating her father, so she does stab Asshat. Still, it was a set-up from the beginning. She thinks what she did back there was not rational.
To save the kingdom of Oriana and, more importantly, to save his father, she might want to reconsider turning herself in, as her fiance said. Still, she notices the wrapper that Cid gave her and recalls her conversation with him, and eventually, her pain intensifies as she is possessed, and then, all of a sudden, she hears this piano play.
Then we see this charismatic scene in which Shadow is playing the piano in the moonlight in this strangely underground tunnel with feathers flying around, proving that Cid was not joking when he decided to take an interest in piano, and here is the grand piano that he stole for the sake of the spotlight.
