Over a ten-year period, the reality TV show The Curse of Oak Island garnered a sizable fan base by using massive machinery to reveal whatever is beneath the cold, wet, and marshy island. With a range of artifacts unearthed across 10 seasons, the tenth season of The Curse of Oak Island left us wondering if the Langina brothers and their team would return for another season.
Two brothers named Rick and Marty Lagina are expert treasure seekers and adventurers who have a strong desire to unearth mysterious myths and undiscovered wealth. In The Curse of Oak Island, these are the primary characters.
Combining their love of engineering and history, they use the most recent tools to unearth hidden gems on the island’s soil. The program follows a range of specialists as they work together to study Oak Island, in addition to Rick and Marty.
Recap
During a single morning’s investigation of Lot 5, the Lagina brothers and metal detector specialist Gary Drayton manage to locate not one, not two, but three distinct coins in Season 11, Episode 1 (which aired Tuesday night on the History Channel). “This seems like a record,” exclaimed Marty Lagina.
Three coins in one morning, all of them old and somewhat out of the ordinary. These might be big league discoveries.” The first of the three coins recovered was about 30 yards from where half of a broken Roman coin was found a year earlier. Marty Lagina and Gary Drayton had initially assumed the coins were of Roman provenance due to their “hand-hammered” appearance.
Not only were these three coins recovered in the Season 11 opener, but two more were found on separate expeditions by Drayton and diver Tony Sampson.
While Sampson’s submerged coin (which he theorizes may be Chinese in origin) cannot be extracted or studied for the time being due to provincial law, the four other coins were brought to numismatist Sandy Campbell, who verified that yet another record was broken during this occurrence.
After bringing all four coins to the Oak Island Interpretive Center, Sandy Campbell is able to closely study them and ascertain the location and time of their origin. Even though two of the coins are fascinating in and of themselves, they don’t add to the fascinating pattern of Roman relics turning up inside Lot 5 limits.
Nonetheless, Campbell believes that two of the coins are Roman, even though they date from very different eras. One dates from between 100 and 300 A.D., while the other is thought to be much older—it dates from the B.C. era. Campbell is positive that the denomination is most likely the oldest coin found on Oak Island, even though it is also suspected to be a French denier.
Spoilers
‘Heavy Lifting’ is the new title for ‘The Curse of Oak Island’ Season 11 Episode 2. Rick, Marty, and their amazing team will be seen pursuing a tunnel that may run directly beneath the Garden Shaft and into the Baby Blob in the next episode of the show.
The baby blob had high levels of gold and silver traces, in line with earlier testing. There appears to be a close relationship between Lot 5 artifacts and privateer Sir William Phips.
Massachusetts Bay Colony native William Phips was an explorer of the 17th century who was born in Maine. At the age of six, James, his father, passed away. Mary, his mother, later wed John White, a neighbor and business associate.
Phips took care of his family’s sheep flock until he turned eighteen. He soon commenced a four-year apprenticeship to become a ship carpenter. He had no formal education. He relocated to Boston in 1673 to further his carpentry abilities. He eventually turned into a treasure hunter. He retrieved a substantial treasure from a Spanish galleon that had sunk.
