The Blood of Dawnwalker Director Says They Considered Adding Fixed-Timetable Events But Avoided Because Players Could Miss Them Without Knowing

Rebel Wolves considered letting world events unfold on fixed schedules, but rejected the idea because players could unknowingly miss important content while managing the game's 30-day time limit.

Coen explores the world of The Blood of Dawnwalker while managing the limited time available to rescue his family.

The Blood of Dawnwalker’s time mechanic was originally much harsher than what players experienced at launch. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz confirmed that Rebel Wolves deliberately loosened the system before release after concerns from players made the team worry that a strict countdown could become more frustrating than engaging.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Tomaszkiewicz confirmed that the original version required players to make considerably more careful decisions.

“We had at first a more restricted time where it was harder to beat the game,”

he explained, adding that the team eventually introduced more breathing room because of concerns surrounding the mechanic.

The game gives players 30 days and nights to rescue Coen’s family from the vampire lord Brencis. However, the clock does not constantly run while players explore the world. Instead, specific quest activities consume segments of time, with the cost displayed before an action is taken.

That approach means players can freely explore, fight enemies and travel without constantly watching the countdown. Tomaszkiewicz said the original version was “quite” more restrictive, but Rebel Wolves ultimately decided that the time system should support the story rather than become a separate challenge.

Rebel Wolves Rejected Fixed-Time Events for a Key Reason

One of the more interesting decisions involved whether events would operate according to their own fixed schedules. With a game built around limited time, Rebel Wolves could have created situations where an event happened at a particular point in the story and disappeared if players were somewhere else.

However, Tomaszkiewicz said the team considered this approach too risky because players might never know that they had missed something.

“We spoke about it,”

Tomaszkiewicz told Eurogamer, explaining that the developers were concerned about showing players that something was happening somewhere without informing them that they had missed it.

Instead, Rebel Wolves designed events around encounters that players can discover themselves. Once players encounter a quest or event, they can decide whether to participate or spend their limited time pursuing something else.

This approach preserves the consequences of the time mechanic without turning the game into a hidden checklist where players can accidentally lose content simply because they were unaware an event existed.

Time Also Controls Character Progression

The time system affects more than quests. Spending accumulated skill points at shrines can also advance the clock, with higher-level upgrades potentially consuming additional time.

Tomaszkiewicz explained that this was intentional because removing the time cost could encourage players to farm enemies for skill points and immediately become powerful enough to rush the main antagonist.

The mechanic therefore helps Rebel Wolves prevent players from ignoring the wider content and simply grinding their character before attacking Brencis.

The Blood of Dawnwalker’s time system remains one of its most discussed features, with some players even creating mods designed to remove it. Rebel Wolves is continuing to respond to player feedback, with a major update planned for early October that will address combat, difficulty, performance and traversal improvements.
