The American dating and relationship reality television series The Bachelor debuted on ABC on March 25, 2002. For the first 25 seasons of the show, Chris Harrison hosted it. Every week during the season, the bachelor eliminates a contestant (see The Elimination Process). His chosen candidate then receives a marriage proposal.
After the first night at The Bachelor mansion, Joey Graziadei is down ten women, so it’s time to get serious. Time for a tennis break, though. The tennis pro gives host Jesse Palmer some lessons on the court following what must have been an exhausting and lengthy night of filming, while the women move into the mansion.
That’s the reason you’re The Bachelor. You can communicate so well! Jesse informs him. After the first night, Joey claims to be “more hopeful than ever” that his wife might be one of the women who survives. If he makes it through the first week.
Recap
A small drama between Taylor and Jess is already developing in the mansion, and it will definitely come up during the dates. Rachel, Taylor, Lexi, Kelsey T., Evalin, Erika, Maria, Lauren, and Jess get to go on their first group date.
The invitation on the date card, “Here come the brides,” tells the women to head to the adjacent room to select their wedding gowns before meeting Joey. As they dash into the adjacent room in search of racks of dresses to try on, it resembles a stampede. Upon exchanging a few barbs over the ideal gown, the ladies board a limo and head to Joey’s wedding reception.
Yes, they are instructed to act as though the nine women and Joey are newlyweds, and they will now spend a few hours engaging in traditional wedding reception activities like dancing, mingling with guests, and eating cake. Joey will select a person at the end of the day to share a memorable first dance with.
Although there isn’t much to do on a group date, it’s still an intriguing option. The fact that they must socialise with complete strangers makes matters even more awkward because it’s unclear who the other attendees of this reception are. To determine who will be seated next to Joey at the bride and groom table, they first play a game of bridal musical chairs.

Lauren and Maria end up snagging those coveted seats, but hats off to Evalin, who launches herself across the very well-decorated table to try to secure one of them. Jaws dropped. Including my own.
Rachel ultimately gets the first dance, and the pair enjoy an intimate moment on the dance floor as Michael Bolton croons “When A Man Loves A Woman.”
At the after party, the women are doing everything they can to steal some of Joey’s attention. Maria changes from a white corset dress to a two-piece bra and skirt set mid-conversation in hopes of seducing him.
Meanwhile, Jess needs to talk to Joey about the fact that she’s feeling insecure after Taylor made some snarky comments during the wedding reception about her. Smartly, she doesn’t actually mention Taylor. It never ends well for the woman that calls out another by name to the lead.
Lauren also pulls Joey aside to let him know that her mood had been off, because the wedding-themed date brought up some grief, as her dad passed away not long ago. Pretending to get married reminded her of how much she wishes her dad would be there for the real thing. To Joey’s credit, he takes every tough conversation in stride. He gives the group date rose to Jess.
