“Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari,” also known as “The Rising of the Shield Hero,” is a Japanese dark fantasy isekai manga series written by Aneko Yusagi and illustrated by Aiya Kyū.
Naofumi Iwatani, a typical Japanese guy, is abruptly summoned into a fantasy world with three other people from a parallel earth. The world had chosen the four other worlds to become the Cardinal Heroes, tasked with protecting the world’s inhabitants from the waves of inter-dimensional creatures. However, Naofumi’s life takes a turn for the worse when he is falsely accused of rape by the Kingdom’s first princess, leading him to be despised and later expelled from the Kingdom.
He had no supporters or resources; he didn’t even have any weapon barring the Legendary Shield, which only granted him impenetrable defensive at the cost of offensive abilities. However, determined to survive and seek revenge, he set out in search of power to stand against those who wronged him. Along the way, Naofumi gains many unexpected allies, including the demi-human, Rapthalia, and the filial queen, Filo.
As Naofumi fights the waves of monsters saving countless lives, he gradually gains the citizens’ trust and proves himself a true hero. Amidst all this, he uncovers the real reason behind the waves and the true nature of his role as the Shield Hero.
Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari Chapter 97: Recap
A group of coliseum participants was waiting in ambush for Naofumi to come so that they could pounce on him together. However, a variable, Nadia, was there with Naofumi. Naofumi asks them whether they thought they had a winning chance outside the Coliseum. The bunch was furious, but before they could do something, Nadia attacked them with her lightning spear, instantly subduing them.
The next panel shows us the events leading up to this; upon returning, Naofumi asks Rafathalia if there were any demi-humans put up to be auctioned. She responds negatively, and with that out of the way, he asks her if she knows where Rishia is.
However, just then, a teary-eyed Rishia enters the room, complaining of being followed on her way back. Taking the opportunity, the slave trader started boasting about their decision to send their bodyguard with her. However, ignoring them, Noafumi asks Rapthalia whether she, too, was attacked by participants.
Rishia was scared, while Raphthalia was somewhat surprised as she had sliced them, thinking they were just some random thugs. From this, Naofumi deduces that those guys must have discovered that Rishia was working with them. So, for safety reasons, he proposes they return to the village.
Once they return to the village, the group meets with Filo and other demi-humans. Seeing everyone other than Filo sleeping carelessly around the campfire, he wonders how they could be so reckless even though they had been enslaved in the past. However, overlooking that, he asked Filo to come with them to share their findings.
Naofumi asks Rishia if she has found a team they need to be wary of; she shutters but then says there was one. It wasn’t a team but rather an individual, Nadia, who the Tournament’s organizer also sponsored.
Noafumi had seen firsthand how strong Nadia was, as back in the alleyway, Nadia had taken down all the assailants who had come for him. Wary of her, he asked that if she was going to fight, why did she give them the “Lucor fruits”? But her response stunned him; she didn’t want to fight him, politely asking him to give up on the Lurolona village’s demi-humans or else she would be forced to kill him.
However, Naofumi and his team came to fight Nadia on the day of the competition. A buffed Rafthalia and Filo attacked her together, but she didn’t even flinch, instantly beating. And the chapter ends as Nadia is about to go on the offensive against Naofumi.
