Adding “breaking the fourth wall,” as Super Pumped Season 1 Episode 5 does, seems like a horrible idea as fans look forward to Episode 6. It is an unneeded narrative shortcut that is currently used in the largely engaging HBO series Winning Time. The framework of this dense, focused show, however, makes talking to the camera feel like a courtroom testimony, with Tim Cook as the chief judge, Uber staff Susan Fowler and Fawzi Kamel as eyewitnesses, and viewers serving as a jury in the court of cable television opinion.
The meeting between Travis Kalanick and Eddy Cue, and Tim Cook, who are threatening to remove Uber from the App Store due to the company’s purposeful and irresponsible breach of Apple’s privacy standards, serves as this episode’s core. Travis cannot even admit the seriousness of the matter in the meeting or before the meeting, and doesn’t even consider an apology. He cracks when his co-founder calls this situation mouse-like, that this may be Uber’s Waterloo. And when Emil, his loyal right hand, suggests an apology, he swallows it like ash. That is not the Uber way of doing things.
Super Pumped S01E05 Recap
Before diving into Super Pumped Season 1 Episode 6, let’s quickly do a recap of the previous Episode. Even though most folks would regard Travis as extremely arrogant, there’s a fragment of a reason to appreciate Travis’s fury right now. Travis knows — and would have no issue informing people, as he did when he encouraged board members to support him like Kirk Gibson at Yankee Stadium — that his no-holds-barred, rule-breaking approach is the reason Uber is the force it is, thanks to the guys who placed him there.
These same men now want him to change his mind as if he isn’t the Frankenstein’s monster they all helped create. Travis was never able to feel remorse for his crimes or pity for the victims of his ambition because it was not in his nature, and his behavior was never limited as long as he was winning.
Even if Travis is correct in his prediction that Apple will not remove such a popular program from its service, the App Store issue represents a genuine existential problem for the company. The circumstance allows Cook to question Travis about his company’s misdeeds, allowing the show to do the same with powerful vignettes centered on Fowler and Kamel, as well as glimpses of Uber’s disastrous “charm offensive” with a press corps it has long disrespected. Travis’s worst traits as a person and a manager inflict substantial damage to the organization and his leadership failings in all of these cases.
Much of Fowler’s experience is based on her highly read blog post “Reflecting on One Very, Very Weird Year at Uber” from February 2017. We already witnessed her incredible description of her first week on the job in an earlier Episode, when her team leader hinted at his “open relationship.” That began her own open connection with Uber’s HR department, but one that left Fowler unsatisfied. The show’s decision to have Fowler recount her narrative to the camera rather than dramatize the clear and not-so-subtle proof that Uber is a toxic work environment for women.
However, Fowler’s blog post so clearly lays out the case that adapting it directly to the screen appears to be the most cost-effective and forceful answer. Working on a truly game-changing app excites Fowler and other female coworkers, so the solution, in the face of widespread sexism and a complicit HR department, was to simply blend in. However, Fowler and many other women at the organization reach a point where this is no longer possible. Now we’ll talk about when Super Pumped Season 1 Episode 6 will air, as well as what will happen in it.
