A surprising Super Mario Bros. secret has resurfaced online, showing that one of Nintendo’s oldest platforming mechanics still has tricks that many longtime players may not know about. The discovery concerns Mushrooms and what happens when one falls into a pit.

In the original Super Mario Bros., a Mushroom that drops into a hole does not necessarily become unreachable. If Mario jumps at the right position, he can apparently collect the power-up from above, despite the Mushroom appearing to have fallen away from the playable area.

The unusual behavior appears to stem from how the original NES game handles objects and collision detection. Rather than immediately becoming inaccessible when the Mushroom enters the pit, its position and collision behavior can allow Mario to interact with it from above.

The discovery was shared by X user tyouzameYSK, prompting renewed discussion among fans about the hidden quirks still found in the 1985 classic. While the trick has little practical value during a normal playthrough, it demonstrates how Super Mario Bros.’s relatively simple systems can produce unexpected results.

The original game remains one of Nintendo’s most influential releases, and discoveries like this continue to attract attention decades after its launch. For veteran players, the Mushroom trick is another reminder that even familiar classics can contain overlooked details.
