Fable Director Says He’s “Happy to Avoid” GTA 6 but Ready to Compete With God of War and Persona

Playground Games director Ralph Fulton says Fable is confident about its February 2027 launch, even as the RPG enters a crowded release schedule.

Playground Games is confident about Fable competing with major games in early 2027, but director Ralph Fulton admits there is one blockbuster the studio was particularly happy to avoid: Grand Theft Auto 6.

Speaking with IGN, Fulton confirmed that Fable was previously targeting an October 2026 release before being delayed to February 23, 2027. The move placed the game in a different but still highly competitive window alongside titles such as God of War: Laufey and Persona 4 Revival.

Fable Is Ready for Major Competition

Despite the busy February schedule, Fulton said Playground Games does not fear launching near other major releases.

“We’re a big game ourselves,”

he explained.

“We hold ourselves to high standards. I’m happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games.”

However, when discussing the decision to move away from its previous October window, Fulton made it clear that Rockstar Games’ upcoming blockbuster was in a category of its own.

“There’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely,”

he said, referring to the GTA 6 release window.

Fulton described the late 2026 schedule as a “chaotic window,” with GTA 6 set to launch on November 19, 2026. He said the reason for moving Fable out of October was “pretty apparent to everybody” and added that he was glad the game had avoided that crowded period.

The upcoming RPG will instead launch on February 23, 2027, more than a decade after the last mainline entry in the franchise. Developed by Playground Games, the reboot returns players to Albion with a new Hero, open-world exploration, player choices, and the series’ trademark British humor.

The official release schedule may have changed, but Fulton’s comments suggest Playground Games remains confident that Fable can stand alongside almost any major game in 2027.
