Square Enix has updated the box art for Kingdom Hearts Collection [1-3] on Nintendo Switch 2 following online speculation that the original promotional artwork was created using generative AI.
The revised cover has already started appearing at select retailers after fans highlighted distorted character details and unusual visual inconsistencies in the initial design.
Square Enix attributes artwork issues to human error
The controversy began when fans noticed warped character features in the original box art, leading to accusations that AI had been used during its creation.
Some community members suggested the artwork may have been based on an illustration by Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura before being altered, although this remained speculation.
In a statement shared with GameSpot, Square Enix denied using generative AI in the promotional asset.
“We’re aware of feedback regarding recent Kingdom Hearts visuals. These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI, and the issues resulted from human error. Quality is extremely important to us, and updated assets have been implemented where appropriate.”
The updated artwork is replacing the original ahead of the game’s launch.
Despite the brief controversy, anticipation remains high for Kingdom Hearts Collection [1-3], as it marks the franchise’s long-awaited native release on Nintendo hardware after the cloud-based versions on the original Switch.
The collection launches alongside Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix for Nintendo Switch on October 8, 2026, while Kingdom Hearts IV has also been confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2.
