A new musical biopic about the life of Janis Joplin is in the works, and Shailene Woodley is set to play the iconic singer-songwriter. Variety reported this exciting news, revealing that Woodley will take on the role of Joplin, who passed away in 1970 at the young age of 27.
Although specific details about the film are still scarce, it has been confirmed that the California Film Commission will provide a $2.5 million tax credit for the project.
The film is scheduled to be shot in San Francisco over a period of 30 days. The production will have an estimated budget of around $10 million, but the final figure will be determined once the cast, director, and writer are confirmed.
Shailene Woodley, who received an Academy nomination seven years ago for her work on the TV series Big Little Lies, will star in this new biopic. The show, which aired its first two seasons in 2017 and 2019, will return for a third season in 2025.
Besides Woodley, the series stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, the latter of whom also earned a nomination and a win for her performance. Big Little Lies is based on Liane Moriarty’s novel and was adapted for television by David E. Kelley, who recently created the popular Apple TV+ series Presumed Innocent.
