A significant record is set by True Detective: Night Country for the HBO series. The fourth episode of the critically acclaimed anthology series, dubbed Night Country, is set in a small Alaskan hamlet and follows the investigation into eight men who inexplicably disappear from an isolated research station.
Issa López has taken over as showrunner from creator Nic Pizzolatto. The cast of True Detective: Night Country includes John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Finn Bennett, Jodie Foster, and Kali Reis.
Following the release of the penultimate episode 5 of True Detective: Night Country, the most recent season has broken some important records for the HBO series.
Based on data from Nielsen and Warner Bros. Discovery, The Wrap reports that True Detective: Night Country has become the highest-watched season of the show, with an average of 12.7 million people across HBO and Max.
This surpasses the record set by the adored first season, which attracted 11.9 million viewers and starred Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.
True Detective: Night Country’s Viewership Has Grown With Each Episode
The season, which is set in Alaska, began on HBO and Max on January 14 to an audience of two million viewers. With 2.6 million viewers across both platforms, the second episode witnessed a 28% rise from the season debut.
With 2.7 million viewers, the third episode of True Detective: Night Country maintained a 5% growth in viewership against fierce competition from the NFC championship game.
Night Country was already surpassing recent HBO hits like Succession season 4, which had an average viewership of 7.9, and The White Lotus season 2, which had an average viewership of 8.6 million, with just a few episodes released. Episode 5 saw 5 million viewers, even though episode 4’s audience figures are unavailable owing to the Super Bowl.
This has not only helped True Detective: Night Country overtake season 1 as the most-watched episode, but it also keeps up the trend of each episode drawing more people than the one before it.
This virtually ensures that True Detective season 5 will air, probably starring Lopez again in the showrunner role should she decide to come back.
