Phantom Blade Zero continues to build momentum ahead of its October release, with a new hands-on preview offering fresh details about its combat system and overall gameplay direction.
Following a playable demo showcased during Summer Game Fest, critics have shared impressions of S-Game’s upcoming action RPG, describing it as a fast, combo-driven experience that emphasizes aggression over the methodical pacing often associated with Soulslike games.
The latest preview paints Phantom Blade Zero as one of the most anticipated action titles of 2026, with fluid movement, diverse weapon combinations, and visually impressive combat standing out as key strengths—the game launches on October 29 for PlayStation 5 and PC.
Fast Combat Sets Phantom Blade Zero Apart
According to a hands-on preview from CheckPoint Gaming, the playable demo focused almost entirely on combat, giving players a closer look at the game’s core mechanics.
While Phantom Blade Zero shares some visual similarities with Soulslike games through its dark fantasy setting and interconnected world design, the combat reportedly feels very different. Rather than relying heavily on stamina management and patient counterattacks, the game encourages relentless offense, fluid movement, and extended combo chains.
The publication noted that combat and traversal were “fluid, fast-paced and full of combos,” adding that the experience felt “more Ninja Gaiden than Dark Souls.” S-Game itself has previously described the title as “kung-fu punk,” a term intended to capture its blend of martial arts, fantasy, and stylish action.
Multiple Weapon Styles Encourage Different Playstyles

One of the biggest highlights from the preview is the game’s flexible weapon system. Players can equip two primary weapons alongside two secondary tools, allowing them to switch instantly during battles to extend combos or break enemy defenses.
The preview noted that heavier weapons, including axes and large hammers, deliver powerful strikes with noticeable weight, while twin blades provide significantly faster attacks and greater mobility. Attack animations also vary depending on each weapon’s size and style, encouraging players to experiment with different loadouts throughout the adventure.
S-Game reportedly demonstrated several weapon combinations during the preview, showcasing how quickly combat styles can change depending on player preference.
Challenging Gameplay Without Harsh Punishment
Although Phantom Blade Zero remains a demanding action game, the preview suggests it will be more forgiving than traditional Soulslike titles. Players won’t lose important resources after dying, and the game will feature adjustable difficulty settings, making it accessible to a broader audience.
Enemies still require careful observation, however, with varied attack patterns rewarding players who learn their opponents and react accordingly rather than relying on button-mashing.
Beyond the playable demo, S-Game also showed members of the press additional gameplay behind closed doors. While specific details remain under embargo, the preview hinted at creative boss mechanics and unexpected emotional moments, further increasing anticipation for the final release.
With its emphasis on stylish martial arts combat, cinematic presentation, and flexible gameplay systems, Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be one of the year’s most closely watched action RPGs when it arrives on October 29.
