Nintendo shares rose 7% in Japan on Friday, August 14, after the company announced that Pokémon Pokopia had surpassed five million copies sold worldwide. The milestone was reached just over four months after the game launched exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 on March 5, 2026.
The result is particularly notable because Pokémon Pokopia is a spin-off rather than a mainline Pokémon release. The life-simulation game combines Pokémon with crafting and building mechanics, with players controlling a Ditto that transforms a deserted terrain into a thriving community.
Earlier in March, Nintendo reported that the game had already sold more than 2.2 million copies in its first four days. Reuters described Pokémon Pokopia as a “stealth hit” and reported that its early performance helped improve sentiment surrounding Switch 2 momentum.

The five-million milestone makes Pokémon Pokopia one of the biggest-selling games on Nintendo’s new console. CNBC reported that the game has moved ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza in lifetime Switch 2 sales, although Mario Kart World remains ahead.
The success comes at an important time for Nintendo. The company has faced pressure from rising memory costs and weaker-than-expected Switch 2 shipments, with Nintendo selling 3.82 million Switch 2 systems during its June quarter, down 34.4% year over year.
Nintendo is also supporting Pokémon Pokopia with additional content. Its Expansion Pass includes Bubbly Basin, while further updates are scheduled through 2027, potentially helping maintain interest in the game.
Investors will now be watching whether Pokémon Pokopia can sustain its momentum and whether upcoming major releases, including a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, can further strengthen Switch 2 sales.
