The show, which is set in Toronto in the 1890s, centres on Detective William Murdoch of the Toronto Constabulary, who uses novel methods of detection to solve many of his cases. These techniques include blood testing, fingerprinting, surveillance, and trace evidence.
The three other key characters, Constable George Crabtree, who is keen to write mystery novels despite his lack of expertise, Inspector Brackenreid, and Doctor Julia Ogden, help Detective Murdoch. The guy directly above Murdoch, Brackenreid, is a harsh and sceptical Yorkshireman who enjoys whiskey.
He favours traditional detective techniques over Murdoch’s quirky ones, but he is usually happy and proud when Murdoch succeeds against all the odds. Crabtree’s zeal and dedication make him a good helper, even though he frequently struggles to understand the more complex techniques.
Dr. Ogden, like Crabtree, is a big fan of Murdoch’s strategies. Her knowledge of pathology typically comes in handy by exposing a wealth of pertinent information that helps Murdoch solve problems.
A minor storyline in the series revolves around Murdoch’s increasing infatuation with her and his incapacity to communicate his emotions. In the fifth season, Dr. Emily Grace, a new physician, is introduced following Dr. Ogden’s marriage to Dr. Darcy Garland, a colleague she met in Buffalo. There is a hint of romantic attraction between her and George Crabtree.
Recap
Murdoch Mysteries Season 17 is set in the late 1890s and early 1900s, just like the other seasons. William uses his investigative skills together with forensic techniques like ultraviolet lighting and fingerprinting to find the murders at the beginning of the new century.
In the sixteenth season, George’s last name was misspelt when Miss Hart unintentionally spilt something in Watt’s water cup. This mistake persisted even after George was appointed as inspector. In the previous season, more sophisticated Murdochian devices were revealed, such as a bolometer and a weaponized capacitor.
The first episode of Season 17, lasting forty-four minutes, was released this week. After Crabtree, Ogden, and William are kidnapped, the inspector’s job is to find them.
The second episode will have William and Ogden debating whether or not a murderer should go to jail for saving their daughter. Meanwhile, they want to kidnap a socialite to take matters into their own hands.
In the third episode, the burglar steals the Mona Lisa and is later slain. As William searches for the guilty, he meets Emily Carr, an artist. Fortunately, the seventeenth season of the program was not impacted by the SAG strike, as it is a Canadian sitcom starring Canadian actors.
