The murder mystery series Murdoch Mysteries, a CBC smash hit, is set in late 1800s Toronto and centres on the cunning sleuthing of Toronto police investigator William Murdoch.
Murdoch solves high-profile crimes in the provincial capital of Canada by utilizing his exceptional intelligence and cutting-edge scientific methods.
The concept of this episode is a bit different from Sherlock Holmes and CSI combined, with Detective Murdoch using both traditional detective work and early forensics to solve the case.
The city coroner Dr. Ogden, an eager group of young constables, Inspector Brackenreid, the heavy-handed boss, and several regular guests help the good detective.
Not every mystery was resolved in Murdoch Mysteries Season 16. It was their goal for the viewers to be eagerly awaiting the next season. Hart and Arthur, however, pursued the athlete’s father.
The final episode of Murdoch Mysteries Season 16 was titled “The Long Goodbye Part 2”. Edward’s tactics were not something William could accept. As a result, he gave his resignation from the Toronto Police Department. William is asked to assist in cracking the case after Mathilda Crisp vanishes, but he turns down the offer.
Recap
Let’s have a brief discussion about Murdoch Mysteries before we go into Season 17 Episode 13. For several reasons, this show is surprisingly engaging and addictive.
First of all, the “Who done it?” plot of each 45-minute episode is distinct and clever, making it both captivating and very unpredictable.
Playing armchair detective is fun for me since it tests my mental stamina as there are always several suspects, each with a strong motivation, and I seldom figure out who the culprit is until the very end.
Murdoch is a very holy man who regularly rejects superstition and embraces science, which gives him an intriguing dual nature. The love aspect of the show also revolves around Murdoch’s relationship with Dr. Ogden, the municipal coroner.
Although they are both intensely attracted to one another, they are afraid to act on their obvious chemistry for fear that it would interfere with their jobs and put the cases in danger.
Due to the show’s historical setting, the subplot frequently addresses inequality, women’s rights, and religion during that time.
Along with making light of itself and the prevailing norms of the era, the show also freely uses legal cocaine like its aspirin, laughs at the notion that sports could one day be lucrative careers, and expresses amazement at the advent of the wireless Telegraph.
The period’s usually sophisticated fashion trends, particularly the almost limitless selection of women’s formal hats, and the vintage police uniforms are also entertaining to observe. Unlike today’s criminals, even the bad guys are usually dressed in some form of suit or elegant menswear.
