A popular Indian reality show that we either made fun of or dreamt of joining, called MTV Roadies, has been around since 2003. During its peak popularity, this youth reality series had become a playground for the country’s badass boys and girls.
The auditions for the show do not make much sense now but were at the time a tough nut to crack, and if you were around during the 2000s, you would know that contestants from all over India would seek out the auditions for this program, but from the thousands that the judges saw, only a handful managed to impress them.
The selected candidates became a part of the show and were taken all around the country to different locations where they would be asked to perform tough tasks that required one to be physically and mentally strong.
The show was initially formed to film contestants doing random acts of kindness to strangers, but with the gradual rise in its popularity, the was taken over by MTV, and the iconic definitely-have-some-anger-issues hosts, Raghu Ram and Rajiv Ram were added to the show, changing the course of its theme drastically.
The duo cursed openly on the show and made it more raw and only for adults. The show has been running for the past seventeen years, and even though the legendary duo is not there to lead it anymore, it continues to be India’s one of the longest-running reality series.
The show, over its total twenty seasons, has gone through so many changes, be it in its format, the judge’s panel members, the hosts, the rewards to the winners, and so much more.
Over the years, the scale of the show has also grown, with the crew even going international for shoots.
While we continue to question the show, its ‘tasks’ that the contestants have to perform, and mostly its audition process, which to this day seems completely unrelated to the actual tasks, the show is still going strong and is currently airing its twentieth season.
The ongoing season is being hosted by actor Sonu Sood with the judging panel including Gautam Gulati, Rhea Chakraborty, and Prince Narula.
The show has paved the way for a lot of other similar reality competition series for both the average people of the country as well as small social media ‘celebrities.’
Presently the show is more about mental strategies and politics that contestants use to come out at the top rather than actual tough physical competition. If you are curious to find out where the show gets filmed, then continue reading till the end.
MTV Roadies’ Filming Locations
India
Let us start with the audition process, which is the only way to enter the show as a contestant. The auditions for the show usually take place in Mumbai, India.
The crew has their own set in the city where all participants who wish to be a part of the show are requested to come. You might be familiar with what the inside of the set looks like if you have seen the series.
But this is not always the case, as there are times when the crew and the judges travel to different cities to audition participants. Some of these cities include Chandigarh, Delhi, Indore, Rishikesh, and Pune.
The most recent season of the show has a whole route planned for the participants starting from Kurukshetra and then moving to Patiala, Chail, Kullu, and Sissu and finally stopping at Kaza in Himachal Pradesh.
Foreign Locations
While the audition for the show only takes place in different parts of India, the crew definitely goes international for the rest of the actual season. The filming crew, along with the judges and the contestants, have traveled to a bunch of places internationally through different seasons.
Season five of the show was the first to have an international shoot, and the crew had traveled to Thailand and Malaysia for it.
With increasing popularity, the crew went all the way to Australia in the next season. Season seven was even grander as we were taken to Kenya and Egypt and to Brazil in season eight.
In 2012, for season nine of the show, the crew flew to the United States, after which it took a break from all the traveling and shot the next two seasons in India. Parts of the show were filmed in Bhutan and Nepal as well.
One of the more recent seasons, season eighteen, which came out in 2022, was filmed in different parts of South Africa.
