Celebrity home tours are a staple of the American documentary television series MTV Cribs, usually referred to as Cribs. The show debuted on MTV. The first run of it was from 2000 until 2010. Short-form episodes of the show were created by MTV in 2017 and released via Snapchat Discover. In 2021, MTV gave the show a second life with fresh, extended episodes.
A pilot episode debuted in September 2000. Throughout 13 seasons, Cribs featured tours of the homes of over 185 celebrities, including actresses, artists, and athletes, by 2005. Ananda Lewis, formerly of MTV News, narrated the show first, followed by SuChin Pak.
September 2010 saw the return of the main MTV Cribs series, which featured improvements and a repackaging of its prior visits, including celebrities like Twiggy Ramirez and Hanson. In late 2010 and early 2011, the main MTV Cribs series produced and aired a few new episodes that included the houses of Manny Pacquiao, Julie Benz, Penn Jillette, and other celebrities.
On June 3, 2017, the show was brought back to life for MTV as a short-form series. New episodes aired on Snapchat Discover every Saturday for several weeks, with the first episode showcasing DJ Steve Aoki in his Las Vegas residence. April 2016 saw the announcement of the relaunch under Sean Atkins, the former president of MTV.
To create a more personal atmosphere, the producers chose not to have a host. The star of the 30-minute documentary-style series always opens the front door, says, “Welcome to my cot,” and introduces themselves.
To give viewers the impression that they are touring the house, a Steadicam follows the celebrity around it while frequently capturing close-ups.
The show’s revival was announced on July 14, 2021, and featured the residences of Snooki, Big Sean, Rick Ross, Martha Stewart, and other celebrities. On August 11 of that year, Pak made a comeback as the narrator. On October 27, 2022, Season 19 premiered.
