Against a horrible reception from the fans and critics, Sony’s superhero flick set in the MCU-adjacent Venom-verse, ‘Morbius’ has done surprisingly alright at the box office on its opening weekend. The film has managed to collect $39.1 million domestically, with a worldwide collection of $80 million in total. Morbius has not been received very well among the critics, audiences, or long-time Marvel fans.
With a relatively low budget, especially for a blockbuster movie, Morbius failed to impress anyone. The biggest reason why Morbius managed to do surprisingly well in its box office opening is because of the universe it shares with previous films. The movie follows the titular long-time Spider-Man comic villain, and sometimes an anti-hero, in his origin story.
Morbius Box Office Opening — An $84 Million Debut
The movie’s predecessors Venom 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home had managed to impress audiences and critics alike. Both of those movies went on two earn big moolah at the box office. The hype surrounding those two movies and for the Marvel-Sony comic book universe connectivity contributed largely to the $39.1 million US opening. The overseas box-office opening for Morbius can be attributed to the fact that many of the markets are observing school vacations.
There are factors contributing to the good start at the box office collection. Being an origin story, it’s more-or-less a similar experience for the general audience as for the long-time fans. That gives the general movie-goer a blank slate to start with.
Save for the post-credits scenes. The movie has little referential content. However, what does this box-office opening mean for Morbius? Will it continue this streak? Or will the collection plummet like many other superhero movies with bad reception did? If we’re to venture a guess, we think it’s the latter.
What’s The Road Ahead For Morbius?
The Morbius box-office collection is most likely going to see a decline over the next few days. It’s not just the bad critical score. It’s the audience that has panned the movie too. In addition to the irredeemably bad writing, effects, action, and plot, the origin story also contains a super confusing post-credits scene in an attempt to set up the upcoming Sinister Six movie.
However, all that is sure to translate to an overall bad box-office collection for Morbius. Sony shouldn’t care that much, though, as the film’s budget is just about $70 million. This ought to give it some footing when you factor in the worldwide collection.
