If you love action-packed stories intertwined with science fiction, Monster #8 is the manga for you. Monster #8 or Kaiju #8 is of the action, science fiction, and adventure genre. The story and illustration of this manga are done by Naoya Matsumoto, and the series has been serialized on the Shonen Jump+ website and app as well. The serialization has been done since July 2020, and there are eight tankobon volumes till October 2022. The licensing of the series has been done by Viz Media for North America.
For those who do not know about this manga, the plot of the story is as follows. The story happens in Japan, where strange and terrifying monsters began appearing many years. To protect the civilians of Japan, an elite group of the military called the Defence Force was formed. The Defence Force consists of brave and skilled warriors who put their lives on the line every day to protect the people around them.
After the monsters are killed, personnel from the Monster Sweeper Inc, called “sweepers,” get rid of the remains. Kafka Hibino is one such sweeper. He is 32 years old and has tried several times to become a part of the Defence Force but failed to make it every single time. So, he had to be content with becoming a sweeper instead. But his desire to join the Defence Force never really died because one day, a new sweeper recruit named Leno Ichikawa appeared.
Ichikawa was ambitious, and his ambitions rekindled the fire in Kafka’s heart to become a soldier in the Defence Force. But he had no idea that his dream would come true, albeit in a very different way. What follows the interactions of Kafka with the new recruit is an event where an unknown Kaiju enter his mouth into his system, turning him into a half-human, half-monster being, and he is named Kaiju #8.
But this turns out to be a blessing that makes his dream come true. With his newly found superhuman strength and powers, he decided to give becoming a member of the Defence Force one last shot.
Monster #8 Chapter 76 recap
The city is rampaged by monsters who are showing up by the minute in different spots. The Defence Force is trying their level best to bring the situation under control, and Mina Ashiro is in the thick of the battle, with Kafka Hibino watching on. Looking at Mina in action, her team members acknowledge that she is the strongest soldier among them and that she is the only one in the entire world who is capable of killing the giant class Kaiju because doing so requires a different set of skills which Mina possesses in abundance.
Mina gets ready to fire at a giant class, Kaiju and her team are ready to rush to the site after the shot is fired and to secure the civilians. She takes aim and shoots at the giant Kaiju, and after a second, the monster explodes. The rest of the team moves to the site of the explosion while Kafka is ecstatic about what he saw Mina do. Mina tells Kafka to stop goofing around and go protect the rest of the citizens, to which Kafka agrees at once.
Gradually, the reports from different areas come out as clear of monsters, and the team feels that they have got everything contained. But one of them feels that their day is not over yet. According to her, there is no way that a cataclysm caused by a No.9 Kaiju would come to such an abrupt end. They realize that the monsters are after something else as they are not destroying any of humanity’s essential facilities, which everyone initially thought they were after.
Suddenly, the monsters began making their move. All at once, different areas report Kaiju, who have a fortitude of over 9.0 and are all identified as the Kaiju class. The Defence Forces have a huge task ahead of them this time around.
