Marvel Studios appears to be preparing for a major change in the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars. While characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor previously served as the franchise’s primary faces, the next era could place the X-Men as the main focus of Marvel’s storytelling.
According to a report from The Direct, Marvel may be positioning Cyclops as the leading character of its third major saga. The report cites insider and host Kristian Harloff, who said, “Cyclops will be the focus of the new mutant saga.”
Cyclops Could Become Marvel’s Next Main Hero
Cyclops is also known as Scott Summers and is one of the most important leaders in the X-Men comics. Previous X-Men movies often focused more on Wolverine, but Marvel Studios could give Scott a much bigger role in its new mutant franchise.
The timing makes sense. Marvel’s current Multiverse Saga is scheduled to conclude with Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. The new X-Men movie is expected to arrive afterward as part of the next phase of the MCU.
Marvel has already taken its first major step toward that future by revealing the cast of its new X-Men movie at D23 2026.
Kit Connor Is Marvel’s New Cyclops
At Disney’s 2026 D23 event, Marvel Studios officially announced Kit Connor as the MCU’s new Scott Summers/Cyclops. He will follow James Marsden and Tye Sheridan, both of whom previously played the character in Fox’s X-Men films.
The new movie will also feature Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Jake Schreier is directing the project.
This casting makes Cyclops’ potential importance even more interesting. If Marvel intends to build its next saga around mutants, Scott could become the character who connects the X-Men to the wider MCU.
The X-Men Are Already Becoming More Important
Marvel has gradually increased the presence of mutants as the Multiverse Saga approaches its finale. Spider-Man: Brand New Day introduced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, marking the first X-Men character to originate within the Earth-616 MCU rather than being imported from another universe.
Avengers: Doomsday brings back several actors from the Fox X-Men franchise, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden.
Their appearances allow Marvel to acknowledge the franchise’s history before introducing a completely new generation.
That makes the transition to the new X-Men particularly important.
