Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with its long-awaited X-Men reboot, with the new mutant-focused movie officially scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 5, 2028. The announcement confirms that the iconic superhero team will receive its first major cinematic reboot under Marvel Studios following Disney’s acquisition of Fox and its X-Men properties.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed the release date, confirming that the upcoming film will introduce a new cast of mutants while bringing the franchise fully into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
New X-Men Cast Brings Mutants Into the MCU
The reboot will feature a fresh lineup of actors taking on some of Marvel’s most famous mutant characters. Sadie Sink will portray Jean Grey, while Kit Connor has been cast as Cyclops. The team will also include Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, and Christopher Abbott as Professor X.
The film will also introduce a major villain, with Adam Driver playing Mr. Sinister, one of the X-Men universe’s most dangerous genetic manipulators.
This will mark the first official X-Men movie produced by Marvel Studios after the Fox era ended with Dark Phoenix in 2019. While mutant characters have already appeared in the MCU through cameos and crossover projects, this will be the first full reboot centered around the X-Men team.
Marvel has been gradually reintroducing X-Men characters into the MCU through projects such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Marvels, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The success of X-Men ’97 on Disney+ has also helped restore interest in the mutant franchise.
The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is expected to feature several returning Fox-era X-Men actors, including Patrick Stewart, Kelsey Grammer, Ian McKellen, and others, further connecting the previous franchise with Marvel’s current universe.
The original Fox X-Men movies played a major role in shaping modern superhero cinema, with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine becoming one of the franchise’s biggest characters. Marvel’s new reboot will now attempt to establish a fresh era for mutants while expanding the MCU’s future storytelling.
