Peacock dropped a docuseries that chronicles the investigation into the Pam Am flight 103 that crashed into a Scottish town after a bomb was placed in its cargo compartment by Libyan-hired terrorists. In Lockerbie, we see both the official, three-year-long investigation as well as the efforts of the victim’s surviving family who, in the search for justice for decades, eventually found the culprits and brought them to justice.
This docuseries manages to dig deep and give us the insider vantage points of those who were involved in the investigation, and the testimonies of the surviving victim’s family members who rallied together in hopes of having an explanation. If you like documentaries about airline tragedies, then this limited original docuseries from Peacock will surely pique your interest.
Recap
Lockerbie’s debut episode chronicles how a group of unknowing passengers boarded a red-eye flight on 21 December 1988. The plane, a Boeing 747 121, which departed from Frankfurt Airport, did a stopover at Heathrow Airport in London on its way to Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Michigan and made a second stopover at JFK Airport in New York.
With a total of 259 occupants, the flight exploded in mid-air shortly after departing from Heathrow over the small Scottish town of Lockerbie, crashing into the outskirts of the town, leaving no survivors and killing people in the town. It was considered the deadliest airline terrorist attack in the UK’s history.
As the story progresses, we learn details about how a three-year-long investigation concluded that the airplane exploded because a bomb was planted in a suitcase by some terrorists who were financed by the Libyan government under the rule of Muammar Gaddafi.
As it turned out, the three-year-long investigation led to a series of clues that led a joint task force that included the American Federal Bureau of Investigations, the British Police, and Interpol, along with the Federal Aviation Administration of the US and the British Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, who picked up every single piece of the crash, and found that a suitcase full of clothes and a Toshiba radio rigged with explosives were put and set up to cause the disaster.
After analyzing the clothes inside the remains of the suitcase, it led to a clothing shop in Malta, in which the conspirators bought the clothes to fill the suitcase. The explosives were procured via Czechoslovakia with the aid of Libyan intel and collaborators. As we’ll see in further episodes, the manhunt for the culprits, the fallout, and how they involved Libya was a complex tangle with geopolitical implications that left 259 people dead
