Apple TV+ is excited to keep going with Dark Matter. The popular sci-fi show, based on the well-known novel by Blake Crouch, has been renewed for a second season. Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly will return as Jason and Daniela.
This news comes just over a month after the season finale aired in June and follows strong reviews from critics and viewers. The second season will aim to answer many questions left by the finale, as Crouch plans to build on the original story.
Dark Matter tells the story of Jason Dessen, a physicist and family man from Chicago. One night, while walking home, Jason is suddenly thrown into an alternate reality where his life is very different because of the choices he made.
He struggles to return home through a maze of different lives he could have lived, facing various sides of himself. He must save his family before a more dangerous version of himself takes over. The show also features a strong cast, including Alice Braga, Jimmi Simpson, Dayo Okeniyi, and Oakes Fegley.
Season 1 covers all the material from Crouch’s book, leaving the family’s final situation unclear. Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked Crouch and executive producer Matt Tolmach about this, and they assured that, for Jason, “Our intention is that this is the guy we started with, and this is the guy we’re ending with.”
While Jason’s ending is clear, the audience is left to decide where the rest of the family ends up. Crouch designed the show to be like the book, with an open ending that leaves room for viewers to imagine what happens next.
Crouch has some ideas for Season 2, despite the unclear ending. One possible storyline is the fate of Ryan (Simpson) and Amanda (Braga), who were reunited in the finale without a clear explanation of how. Crouch was cautious when asked about them, and Simpson hinted that their story might be important in Season 2, saying, “I’m not even going to talk about that.
That story is currently being created, so that’s just a little too much advanced info.” Edgerton mentioned that there are many possibilities for the show’s future. With characters like the Dessens, Leighton (Okeniyi), and various versions of Ryan and Amanda, there are plenty of ways to expand the sci-fi world and explore their stories.
As viewers get deeper into the show, they become more interested in how the characters relate to each other and the technology around them. There is curiosity about what happens to characters like Leighton, Amanda, and the different versions of Ryan.
The show could find many different directions while continuing to deepen the audience’s investment in these characters. All episodes of Dark Matter Season 1 are now available on Apple TV+. Stay tuned for more updates on Season 2.
