Joaquin Phoenix is officially out as the lead in Todd Haynes’s eagerly awaited untitled gay romance film. There were rumors about the film for some time, but it is now confirmed that Phoenix left the project two weeks ago.
His departure has left a significant gap in the production, and the producers are working hard to find a replacement. Phoenix had not only been cast as the lead but also helped develop the story with Haynes and Jon Raymond.
The production was close to starting, and Phoenix was already at the location in Guadalajara, near the Southwestern coast of Mexico.
Phoenix was supposed to act alongside Danny Ramirez from Top Gun: Maverick. They would play two passionate lovers who escape California for Mexico in the 1930s. Phoenix had been a major force for the film, both financially and creatively.
He pushed Haynes and the team to make the intimate scenes more intense, which might have earned an NC-17 rating. The director appreciated Phoenix for taking the film to “uncomfortable” but natural places. It is a significant loss that Phoenix left the project before San Diego Comic-Con. With his role being so central, the film might not continue.
Killer Films, run by Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler, was set to produce the film, with MK2 Films handling sales. Since Phoenix is unlikely to return and no replacement is being sought, the focus is now on making sure everyone who invested gets paid.
The reason for Phoenix’s sudden departure is unknown, and it would have been his first gay role on-screen.
What’s Next for Phoenix and Haynes?
With their joint project likely canceled, both Haynes and Phoenix have new plans. Haynes is now working on “Trust,” a limited series based on Hernan Diaz’s novel. This project will bring him back together with Kate Winslet and will also be co-written with Jon Raymond. HBO will air the series.
Phoenix is preparing for “Joker: Folie à Deux,” which will debut at the Venice International Film Festival and be in theaters in October. This sequel to Todd Phillips’s 2019 hit will also feature Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. Additionally, Phoenix has worked with Ari Aster again on the Western comedy “Eddington,” which finished filming in May.
Stay tuned for updates on how Haynes and Phoenix move forward with their new projects. Phoenix’s “Joker: Folie à Deux” premieres this October.
