Curious to know whether or not Amazon’s Original psychological thriller, “Swarm,” is based on a true story? Then you have come to the right place. 2023 release, Swarm, which encircles the life of an obsessive fan and a celebrity, has been highly appreciated by the fans, and while watching each scene of this amazing story, fans started connecting them to real-life stories, which became quite famous in the past.
Swarm chronicles a girl named Andrea, who is an obsessive fan of the pop star Ni’jah. Swarm is the fanbase of Ni’jah, which even Andrea is a part of. Soon she gets severely involved in the fanbase and discovers the dark world that surrounds it.
The Eight Part Story of Swarm dives deeper into the dark crimes that Andrea gets involved in, which devastates her life.
Created by Janine Nabers and Donald Grover and starring Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey, Damson Idris, Billie Eilish, Leon, and Cree Summer, Swarm has been nominated for its perfect depiction of the crimes that the obsessive fandom of a prominent celebrity could commit. But is Swarm based on a true story? Well, many fans are intrigued to know what real-life stories are associated with Swarm.
Is Swarm Based On A True Story?
No, the psychological thriller Swarm is not based on a true story. All the characters and the events which are shown in the series are clearly fictional. However, while creating Swarm, the creators of the show, Janine Nabers and Donald Grover, have researched many real-life cases of obsessive fans and fandoms who have committed dark crimes.
According to the creators, the writers of the show spent around 6 months researching such crimes, which could relate to their idea of creating the plotline of Swarm. After compiling all those stories that have taken over the internet back in years, they could pen down the story of Andrea “Dre” Greene and pop star Ni’Jah in Swarm.
The reason why the fans suspected that Swarm is based on a true story is because of the disclaimer that they get to see at the beginning of every episode, which mentions the story is not fiction, and if the viewers find any similarity in the events, persons, and living or dead, all of it is intentional.
Even though it seems like just a sarcastic or provocative disclaimer because of the dark comedy genre that Swarm follows, when the viewers dived deeper into the events of Swarm, they start suspecting that this series has some connections with the true events, if not based on the real-life cases.
Janine Nabers, the creator of Swarm, later confirmed in an interview that the disclaimer, which we see in the beginning, is not just a creative line, but it has a great significance and a meaning hidden behind it. Because the creators have provided fans with content related to what is there on the internet as stories and news stories, and then they have put their main character in the middle of those stories.
She continued saying that even though the cases that the Swarm team referred to are very sensitive, they have managed to push it to the very edge of those stories, yet it is legal, and that’s what makes her proud.
Does Swarm Have Connections With The Pop Star Beyonce?
When fans watched Swarm, they suspected that the character of Ni’Jah in Swarm has some connections with Beyonce, and their anticipations turned out to be true. Ni’jah in Swarm is heavily inspired by Beyonce, but not based on her life.
Janine became vocal about fans relating Beyonce to the character of Ni’Jah. She said that while making Swarm, she focused on the feeling that the black pop star gives, and as Beyonce is one of the most famous black woman celebrities, it is okay for fans to project her into the character of Ni’Jah.
Janine Nabers, while in an interview, confirmed that the Swarm team has taken some Beyonce-related events in the series. She talked about the rumor which got viral in 2016 when Beyonce released her “Lemonade” album.
According to the rumor when the album was released, a woman, who also happened to be Beyonce’s fan, committed suicide because, in the album, Beyonce mentioned that someone had cheated on the prominent pop star, which she relates to herself and her husband, Jay-z and the same rumor has became a pilot scene of Swarm, featuring the character Marissa Jackson.
When Janine researched more, she got to know more crazy stories and rumors about the obsessive fans. So, not only the Beyonce-related rumors but other real-life cases related to other celebrities and their fans have also become a part of creating this amazing psychological thriller Swarm.
