After too many months of waiting, cancelation rumors, and lots of expectations, The Great, the American and British period piece chronicling the lives of Peter III and Catherine The Great, is back to tell more tales of palace livelihoods, intrigues, and regal whims, all with the high-value production style, cast and filmmaking that the public got used to in its first two seasons under the production work of Tony McNamara.
This third season picks up with Catherine The Great trying to affirm her rule over the vast territories that make up Russia after a power grab, a coup that was quite successful in her execution, but as we know, getting to power is only one-half of the journey, as Catherine must now face the challenges of statecraft, decision-making and juggling through the palatial woes that often get in the way of enjoying the privilege of wearing the crown.
Is the Crown too heavy for Catherine? Will she break in the attempt to rule this season? We’re about to find out as the series makes its way to the small screen, and we tell you what you need to know to enjoy it from the comfort of your home.
What You Need To Know About The Great Season 3 Plot
The Great will pick up after Catherine’s power grab; her second thoughts concerning the execution of Peter and his house arrest will occupy her mind as she begins to rule the destinies of Russia. The birth of Paul will add complexity to the plot as parenthood will transform Catherine and Paul’s relationship when they look at the future in foresight. Still, palatial plots and intrigue will build up as Peter’s entourage plots against him, and Catherine’s court will also turn her back on her, but her Majesty’s ace under the sleeve will show up and surprise everyone if the series follows the historical events.
While this show goes to great lengths to show us the posh style of Imperial Russia, we can expect to see more of that while the story arcs and character development take place. As stated earlier, Catherine is well-embarked in the ruling, which means dealing with Court affairs, meetings with ambassadors and counts and dukes, and making state choices. This leaves us to their better half, who will enjoy all of the responsibilities of being consort monarch: That’s hunting trips, banquets, and eventually some face time with baby Paul.
The Great Season 3 Cast
The cast of this period piece essentially stays the same, with Elle Fanning playing Queen Catherine, Nicholas Hoult playing Peter, Anthony Welsh as Basil the priest, Charity Wakefield as Georgina Dymova, Douglas Hodge as General Velementov and Phoebe Fox as Marial.
Of course, Gillian Anderson will be back for her role as Joana of Holstein, and Jason Isaacs will play Peter the Great. Rounding up the cast, we have Sacha Dhawan, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Belinda Bromilow, Florence Keith-Roach, and Bayo Gbadamosi as Arkady.
