Based in Minneapolis, the Minnesota Twins are a professional baseball franchise in the United States. The Twins are a member club of the American League (AL) Central Division and play in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Twin Cities nickname for the two nearby cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul serves as the inspiration for the team’s name.
Originally known as the Washington Senators, the franchise was established in 1901 in Washington, D.C. At the beginning of the 1961 season, the franchise relocated to Minnesota and adopted the new name Minnesota Twins. From 1961 to 1981, the Twins played at Metropolitan Stadium; from 1982 to 2009, they were housed in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. Target Field has hosted the team since 2010.
The team won the World Series in three different guises: Senators in 1924, Twins in 1987 and 1991, and so on. The overall regular-season win–loss–tie the record for the Senators/Twins franchise from 1901 to 2022 is 9,090–9,800–109; for the Twins (through 2022), it is 4,867–4,936–8 (.496).
