KBS1’s family-centered drama, Apple Of My Eye (My Gold, My Jade), has started airing its episodes on the platform. The show’s story revolves around Geum Kang San and his daughter Geum Jan Di, as he tries to navigate life as a single parent while also making sure that Jan Di never feels left out or alone.
The drama has been airing since March 27th, 2023, and will continue releasing episodes until September 2023. Choi Ji Yeong is the director for Apple of My Eye and is most recognized for his work, like Stock Struck, The All-Round Wife, and Love on A Rooftop. Screenwriter for the drama is Chae Hye Young, who has also been a part of shows like Unasked Family.
Actor Seo Joon Young and Yoon Da Young will star as the protagonists. Unlike many other latest dramas, Apple Of My Eye will be around for a long time, as the show has been ordered for about 120 episodes. With each episode, we’ll see the Geum and Mi Rae’s families come closer despite the huge differences in their lifestyles and personalities.
If you’re looking for a slow-paced, well-written family melodrama, Apple of My Eye is a good watch as it has both modern and traditional ways of portraying the story. The filming style is much similar to soap dramas from back in the day, and the acting skills of Seo Joon Young and Yoon Da Young are great. Despite being child actors, Kim Si Eun and Kim Ha Gyeom play their roles well.

Apple Of My Eye 2023: Plot of The Show
The plot of this Choi Ji Yeong drama is centered on the father-and-daughter relationship between Geum Jan Di and her father, Kang San. When Jan Di was just an infant, her mother, Seon Joo, left her family to pursue her dreams of being a professional ballerina in another country. Kang San tries to stop her, but seeing her fixated on the dream, he lets her go.
Now raising Jan Di on his own, he starts to work at Hang Do’s Side Dishes, a small restaurant specializing in producing the tastiest food in town. The place’s owner is Ma Hong Do, Seon Joo’s mother. Kang San lives with her, Seon Joo’s sister, and his daughter. Due to the renovation projects around their restaurant, their regular customers start to decrease, causing the business to be at an all-time low.
On the other hand, we see the story of Mi Rae, a young woman adopted by the Hwang Do family’s daughter, Chan Ran. As she isn’t truly a part of the Hwang Do family, the patriarch, Hwang Man Seok, does not have a good relationship with Mi Rae and treats her like a stranger. He looks forward to naming his great-grandson, Joon Pyo, the company’s heir.
Joon Pyo and Jan Di are of the same age and study at the same school. They don’t get along well and fight whenever they cross paths at the academy. Mi Rae knows Man Seok doesn’t like her, so she does her best to be there for him when his health declines due to Parkinson’s. His health also greatly affects his company’s new products, as the new leaders fail to make tasty products.
Until now, we’ve seen Kang San working as a street food vendor and delivery guy to make ends meet. While giving out restaurant fliers, he also gives out “Missing person” posters of Jan Di’s mom in hopes of finally getting to know where she was after so many years. He comes across Jan Di secretly applying makeup as she will audition for a KPOP Idol program later.
Meanwhile, Mi Rae prepares for an interview at an art school. It had always been Mi Rae’s dream to start her art academy alone. Kang San was also at the art school at the time as the person working there was his good friend, and he ordered food from them frequently. Mi Rae arrived late to the interview as the stairs were being cleaned, and she had strong claustrophobia, making it hard for her to use elevators.
The interview went well, but she feared she could be rejected since she was late. At school, Jan Di and Joon Pyo see each other. While Jan Di made one of her dance moves, she blocked Joon Pyo’s path. This causes him to lash out at her, and things get extremely heated when he says that her mom left her because she was a bad daughter. Kang San and Joon Pyo’s mom get dragged into the situation, but it later calms down after they find out that Joon Pyo is at fault.
