What Happened In The Previous Chapter?
In Chapter 35, the first panel shows Serbel Von Ecklen, the commander of the Lanberg Knights, asking Astelle for a dance, to which she replies that she doesn’t know how to dance. Suddenly, Kaizen appears from behind and asks Astelle for her first dance, but she refuses the emperor as well, shocking everybody.
Astelle explains that it has been too long since she’s been to a ball, and she’ll surely be rude to Kaizen while dancing because of her rusted skills. The emperor seems upset and asks Astelle if he requested her earnestly, she agrees, and both start their dance.
As they are dancing, Astelle remembers the times she devoted herself entirely to dance practice, to be elegant and beautiful, and how she perfected every gesture until her feet bled only for the emperor. Kaizen states that she is a very good dancer, to which Astelle recalls that she always wanted to hear those words as before Kaizen never attended balls because of his dislike towards them.
The panels of the manga show the contrast between an Astelle who danced on her own once upon a time and an Astelle who now dances with the emperor. Somehow, the depiction is not joyous, and Astelle seems grim when Kaizen compliments her. It’s meant to portray that despite her achieving the dream that she had once, she is unhappy because of the circumstances under which they have been achieved. She now lives a luxurious life, but she is sad because this life has been forced upon her, so even the compliment that she wanted to listen to for a long time does not make her forget under what pretense she is here.
Astelle decides that this is the moment she would ask her big request to the emperor because everyone’s attention is focused on them. She gets down at his feet and explains how her grandfather, the Marquis of Kalenberg, has fallen ill because of the long journey he did to see her, and thanks to Kaizen, he has recovered a bit. There is a murmur amongst the crowd who are wondering about the marquis’s health. Then Astelle begs the emperor to let her grandfather and little nephew go back first. The crowd is wondering whether Kaizen will allow this request or not, and the last panel of the chapter ends with an angry-looking Kaizen’s face.
