Patti LaBelle, originally Patricia Louise Holte, is a professional American actress, singer, and songwriter who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 24, 1994 and is known for her second solo album titled Tasty.
Patricia is the daughter of Henry Holte, a club performer and a railroad worker and Bertha Holte, a domestic worker. Patricia had a relatively happy childhood, but as she grew older, she realized her parents were in an abusive marriage. Patricia gained an interest in music after she joined the choir at a local church. From there, she went on to perform solo two years later. Patricia’s group became a local attraction within no time, but it fell through after two of the band members moved on in life after getting married. Patricia’s band Ordettes later included three more members Sarah Dash, Cindy Birdsong, and Nona Hendryx, who later auditioned for Harold Robinson, a local record label. Initially, Robinson wasn’t interested in Patricia as he felt she was too dark and plain for the music industry.
In 1971 Patricia signed under Warner Bros. Record thus releasing their debut album. Patricia signed a solo contract with Epic Records and recruited Chameleon’s producer to record her debut album. LaBelle has recorded two songs titled Stir It Up and New Attitude for Beverley Hills Cop, an Eddie Murphy film.
Patricia was sexually assaulted in the 1960s by Jackie Wilson at Brevoot Theatre in Brooklyn. Patricia and Otis Williams were engaged for a year before LaBelle broke it off fearing Otis would force her to quit her career as a singer. Patricia was married to Armstead Edwards, a school teacher, and the couple had a son together before they separated in 2003.
Patricia lost several of her beloved family members at a young age. Some of Patricia’s notable music albums consist of Tasty, Burnin, Gems, Flames, Timeless Journey, The Gospel According To Patti LaBelle, Bel Hommage, and This Christmas.
