Plot
Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles) is an intelligent, strong-willed 17-year-old girl who is sometimes considered a misfit among her peers due to her dark, sarcastic sense of humor and Intelligent Quotient (I.Q.) of 133. She is also fiercely independent and reluctant to change, which often puts her at odds with her father, Walter (Larry Miller), the overprotective head of the English department at Padua High School.
One day, new student Cameron James (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) arrives and tries to get on Kat’s good side by offering to buy her beer. When she refuses, he vows to get revenge by making her life as difficult as possible. Meanwhile, Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik), Kat’s beautiful and popular younger sister, is trying to persuade their father to let her go out on a date with Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) richest and most popular boy in school. Walter initially refuses to let Bianca date until Kat does, knowing full well that Kat will never agree to it.

The Need For A Date
Desperate to find a way out, Bianca begs Cameron to find someone to take Kat out on a date so she can have her freedom. Cameron agrees on the condition that Bianca goes out with him first. She initially refuses but eventually relents after he threatens to tell her father about their secret kissing sessions. Cameron suggests that the only way to do it is to find someone as horrible as Kat so she will appear more desirable by comparison.
Patrick
Enter Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), a mysterious bad-boy with a reputation for being a ladies’ man. After Bianca gives him her phone number, Patrick begins to woo her sister to make Kat jealous. At first, Kat is disgusted by Patrick’s advances, but she eventually starts to fall for him. However, just when it seems like the two are finally getting together, Patrick ruins everything by admitting that he only pretended to like her so he could make Bianca look better.
Kat is heartbroken and angry, but she soon realizes that Patrick may be the only person who can truly understand her. She forgives him, and the two finally get together. The film ends with Kat speaking about how it is better to be single than to be with someone who doesn’t truly appreciate you.
