The Battlefield Prepares for War
The episode begins with David singing at sunrise, bringing a sense of peace before the storm. However, the calm does not last. Jesse (Louis Ferreira) sends his sons to war, and Nathaneel (Aziz Dyab) protests, reminding Jesse of his hatred for King Saul (Ali Suliman).
Jesse insists that they fight for their people and for God. Meanwhile, David asks why he cannot go with them, but Jesse avoids the question and instructs him to stay behind and watch the sheep. Though frustrated, David obeys his father.
At the Valley of Elah, the Philistines arrive, and Goliath stands alongside his brothers. The Israelites prepare to defend themselves, knowing that war is unavoidable. King Saul reflects on his 30 years of ruling. As Abner (Oded Fehr) helps him into his armor, Saul takes more of Ahinoam’s (Ayelet Zurer) potion.
He asks Abner, “Tell me who I am.” Abner calls him “Saul the Conqueror,” but Saul wants to know his personal worth. Abner assures him that he gave his life meaning.
Jonathan (Ethan Kai) and Joab (Aury Alby) observe the troops and encourage a young soldier by reminding him that God is with them. The boy asks if Samuel (Stephen Lang) will bless the battle, and Jonathan answers, “If God wills it.” Saul tries to strengthen the army’s resolve, but tensions remain. Adriel (Stewart Scudamore) from the Tribe of Judah stands by the king but remembers past betrayals.
David Prepares for His Journey
Back in Bethlehem, Jesse and David continue their daily routine, praying for wisdom and guidance. Their quiet moment is interrupted when Samuel arrives. Samuel sits with David, Jesse, and Avva (Rada Rae) and speaks about destiny and purpose.
David expresses his desire to fight, but Samuel gently redirects the conversation, knowing David is not yet ready. Jesse asks why the prophet has come, and Samuel responds that he is there to redeem the sins of the house.
Saul Faces His Fears While Goliath Challenges Israel
At the battlefield, the armies stand in a tense standoff. King Achish (Alexander Uloom) seeks revenge for his father’s murder, and Jonathan acknowledges that if his own father had been killed, he would feel the same anger. The Philistines are not fully united, as Ekron is missing, which offers a small advantage to Israel.
However, Goliath steps forward in his full armor, towering over everyone. He roars his challenge to the Israelites:

“I defy Israel. I defy your God. Send me your champion!”
The sight of the giant shakes the Israelites, and even Saul struggles to remain calm. A vision of himself and Goliath overwhelms him. He falls off his horse, breaking his potion bottle. Desperate to regain control, Saul announces that whoever defeats Goliath will receive his daughter’s hand in marriage as a reward.
David’s Visions and Samuel’s Guidance
That evening, David plays music for Samuel and asks why they are waiting instead of fighting. The prophet tells him a story about his mother, Hannah, who remained faithful to God. “The influence of a mother is greater than a king, a thousand kings,” Samuel says, showing David a token he wears in her honor.
David confesses that he has been having strange dreams—visions of a place where he feels “peace beyond understanding.” He describes streams and a warrior protecting them. Samuel listens carefully and then tells David about Joshua, Moses’ apprentice, and the Captain of the Armies of the Lord of Hosts.
Samuel explains that instead of asking, “Is God for us?” the real question should be, “Are we for God?” He reminds David that Joshua’s submission to God led to the fall of Jericho.
The next day, Goliath repeats his challenge. If an Israelite champion defeats him, the Philistines will become their slaves, but if he wins, Israel will serve the Philistines. Days pass, and no one steps forward to fight him.
Meanwhile, in Gibeah, Ahinoam reads letters from the battlefield to Mychal (Indy Lewis) and Mirab (Yali Topol Margalith). Mychal realizes that Saul is losing control and suggests they pray, but Ahinoam refuses. “I don’t want to hear God’s name,” she declares.
Mychal and Mirab Make a Bold Choice
Despite their mother’s words, Mychal sneaks into the scripture room and takes a scroll before escaping. She plans to see her father at the battlefield, hoping to bring him back. Mirab hesitates but ultimately decides to join her, saying, “There is always hope.”
At the battlefield, the Tribe of Zebulun abandons Saul, believing God is no longer with him. Adriel criticizes Saul’s leadership and offers to take charge. Abner threatens him, but Jonathan is deeply affected by the words.
He nearly goes to fight Goliath himself, but Abner convinces him to consider another approach—assassination. He introduces Jonathan to a group of mercenaries who plan to kill Goliath in secret.
As night falls, Mychal and Mirab continue their journey. They discuss fear, but Mychal insists that there is no time for it. Mirab brings up David, but Mychal bitterly responds that he abandoned their father. In truth, Ahinoam sent David away, but Mychal does not know this.
In Bethlehem, Samuel tells Jesse that the sins of his house have been forgiven through a worthy sacrifice. He speaks to Jesse privately and says that God’s blessing is upon them. However, he confronts Jesse about his reluctance to let go of David. Jesse admits that he fears David’s unstoppable fire, but Samuel tells him that he has yet to give God his greatest love—David.
David’s Destiny Becomes Clearer
After speaking with Samuel, David experiences another vision. He sees the Captain of the Lord of Hosts and, like Joshua, removes his shoes to walk on the holy ground. He asks, “What would you have your servant do?” The warrior points to the water, and David steps in, finding a bloody stone in his hand.
He wakes, feeling the weight of his destiny. Jesse calls him inside and tells him to take food to his brothers at the battlefield. Before David leaves, Jesse finally shares the truth about his past.
He tells David about his first wife, who was pure, and how he later married David’s mother, Nitzevet (Siir Tilif), despite the law. Jesse then shares her last words: “Let him rise.” She always knew David had a great purpose.
“I don’t keep you here because I am ashamed of you,” Jesse says. “I keep you here because I love you.”
At the Israelite camp, Doeg (Ashraf Barhom) watches Saul and warns Jonathan about an even bigger threat than Goliath. He reveals that Samuel has anointed another king. Doeg wants a name so he can eliminate him, but Jonathan refuses.
“Even if I die on that field, it won’t be before I watch the life drain from your eyes,” Jonathan tells Doeg.
That night, as Saul suffers visions of his son’s death, Jonathan secretly joins Abner’s assassins. The next morning, Samuel and Jesse send David on his journey, reminding him to “remember the lion’s roar.” With that, David sets off toward the battlefield, bringing the series closer to the moment that started it all.
