Rockstar Games says the sheer size of Grand Theft Auto 6’s world means players should not expect the main story to take them across every part of Leonida. According to Rockstar senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries, the story will naturally introduce players to many areas, but the size of the map makes it impossible to showcase everything through the campaign alone.
In an interview with Game Informer, Humphries explained that Rockstar sees the story as a way of guiding players through the world rather than serving as a complete tour of the map.
“Part of the job of the game’s story is to bring the player around the map in a way that feels authentic and interesting,”
Humphries said.
“We don’t have time to take you everywhere, but we want to be able to explore and get a feel for most of the places, cultures, and vibes.”
GTA 6’s massive map leaves room for exploration
Rockstar has previously described Leonida as being roughly twice the size of the map featured in GTA 5, making the upcoming game’s open world significantly larger than its predecessor. However, the studio appears to be focusing just as heavily on the density and detail of the environment as its overall scale.
Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut emphasized that the team has paid attention to even the smallest parts of Leonida, including interiors, rooftops and alleyways. He said the developers “obsessed about every part” of the new world while working toward a map that feels cohesive rather than artificially expanded.

Garbut also pointed to the number of explorable interiors as evidence of Rockstar’s approach to world design. According to him, the team reached a point where the sheer number of interiors helped make buildings feel more convincing from both the outside and inside.
The enormous map also appears designed to reward players who go beyond the missions. GTA 6’s world features an extensive ecosystem, with Rockstar revealing more than 60 bird species and over 30 land mammals. Players can encounter wildlife ranging from flamingos and alligators to manatees.
Weather is another major part of Leonida’s dynamic environment. Rockstar has discussed localized weather effects, including changing winds, sunset breezes, updrafts and swirling debris, alongside more extreme conditions such as hurricanes and tropical storms.
That combination suggests the main story will provide only one way of experiencing GTA 6’s world. While missions will deliberately move players through different locations and communities, Rockstar is leaving plenty of Leonida for players to discover independently.
