Anime fans can expect a high-energy start to Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games thanks to its latest opening theme. On July 8, Japanese metalcore band HANABIE released its new digital single, Life Is Short, O Brave Girl, along with an official music video. The track serves as the opening theme for the currently airing anime, bringing the band’s signature blend of heavy metalcore sound and colorful Harajuku-inspired style to the series.
The song’s release coincides with the anime’s ongoing summer broadcast, giving viewers a fresh opening that matches the fast-paced, competitive spirit of the fighting game comedy. With both the single and music video now available, fans can experience the new theme alongside the latest episodes of the series.
Wrote the Opening Theme Around the Anime’s Main Characters
Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games follows Mitsuki Aya, a scholarship student at the prestigious Kuromi Girls’ Academy, who admires the elegant and popular Mio Yorue. However, Aya soon discovers that Mio is far different from her graceful public image. Behind her calm personality is a fiercely competitive fighting game player who loves intense matches and never backs down from a challenge. Although gaming is prohibited at the academy, the two girls secretly compete, turning their rivalry into a growing friendship.
HANABIE. approached the opening theme with the story in mind rather than creating a standard anime song. Vocalist Yukina revealed that she read the original manga before writing the lyrics. The song would capture the personalities and emotions of the main characters. She also explained that the project felt especially meaningful because of HANABIE. was formed by classmates at an all-girls high school, giving the band a personal connection to the anime’s setting.
The rest of the band also added their own creative touches. Drummer Chika highlighted a sequence of four rapid China cymbal hits that matches the chorus lyrics MATCH UP!! SMASH UP!!, while guitarist Matsuri said the band intentionally kept its heavy sound instead of softening it for the anime. That decision allows the opening theme to reflect both the intense energy of competitive fighting games and HANABIE.’s signature musical style.
Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games Continues Its Summer Broadcast
The anime is based on Eri Ejima’s manga, which has been serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper since 2020. The series has also gained an international readership through Seven Seas Entertainment, which publishes the manga in English. Its combination of school life, comedy, and competitive gaming has helped it build a dedicated fan base before the anime adaptation even premiered.
Produced by Diomedéa and directed by Shota Ihata, the television adaptation officially premiered on July 7, 2026, after being delayed from its originally planned 2025 release. The series is currently airing on Japanese television networks, including AT X and Tokyo MX, while Crunchyroll streams the anime for international audiences. The ending theme, New Game, is performed by Halca.
To make the competitive gaming scenes feel authentic, Kadokawa collaborated with its professional esports team FAV Gaming during production. Players with experience in Street Fighter 6 provided guidance during recording sessions, helping the staff recreate the excitement and strategy of real fighting game tournaments throughout the anime.
HANABIE. Continues to Expand Its Global Reach
The anime collaboration arrives during another busy year for HANABIE. The band has continued its international expansion throughout 2026 with performances across South America and Mexico, including concerts in São Paulo, Guadalajara, and Mexico City. These overseas appearances reflect the group’s growing popularity beyond Japan.
First gained significant international attention after becoming the first Japanese female band to perform on a main stage at Lollapalooza Chicago in 2024. Since then, the group has continued building its global audience through releases such as the Bucchigiri Tokyo and HOT TOPIC EPs, while maintaining its signature blend of heavy metalcore and colorful Harajuku-inspired fashion.
With Life Is Short, O Brave Girl now serving as the opening theme for Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games, both the anime and the band are reaching new audiences this summer. The collaboration combines the series’ competitive gaming story with HANABIE.’s energetic sound, making it a natural partnership for fans of anime and modern Japanese rock music.
