In the last episode, we saw how gangsters broke into a tavern to demand money from the elderly owners. On the desk, a burned newspaper with Harvey’s face symbolizes the near-impossibility of the mayor-elect’s duty of combating crime in the city. The absence of the Dark Knight leaves regular people more open to increased illicit activity.
The action shifts to the Kelley family, where Carrie’s sleep is interrupted by her mother, Dr. Kelley, who is watching out for Carrie’s academic progress. Carrie tells her mom during their talk about the upcoming parent luncheon at Gotham Academy.
Although Dr. Kelley’s hectic schedule makes it somewhat difficult for her to attend the event, and despite the fact that Carrie is similarly casual about it, she nonetheless vows to make the necessary schedule adjustments in order to attend, as a responsible parent would for their child.
The relationship between Carrie and her mom seems to be very different from that of the Row children or Stephanie’s parents. Stephanie presents the portion of the inquiry she has been working on thus far at the Belfry Clocktower, the hiding place of Turner, Duela, Cullen, and Harper.
Despite having a relationship with Felix Harmon’s mentally ill child, Cressida didn’t pay for her hospitalization over the years. Turner and crew decide to look up the business address in an effort to uncover further hints, and it turns out that it is the hiding place of the ex-gangsters. They are recognized by Harper as being part of the most powerful gang, the McKillens, an Irish organized crime group.
She also admits that she formerly dated Dylan, the gangster’s boss’s son, so she knows how they operate and where their strongholds are. At the Belfry, Harper makes an observation about how some of the illegal laundering funds the McKillens engaged in were very quiet back when she was close enough to Dylan to be aware of the activities of the crime family.
She makes a connection between that and the most recent discovery to conclude that the McKillens are acting as supplementary enforcers for the Court. And in return, the court is providing them with protection so they may continue to be untouchable by the law.
This indicates that they can prosecute the Court of Owls and the criminal organization if they can reveal the money transactions between the McKillens and the Court. Harper knows where the actual hard copies of the papers might be.
