HGTV is a network dedicated to home improvement. We know that, and its latest show featuring interior decorators and contractors Denise, and Mike Butler will catch your eye if you like renovation shows because this pair really have a lot of patience and attention to detail when it comes to bringing some life into properties whose aesthetics are dismal.
It’s no surprise the show’s called Fix My Frankenhouse, not because the property is haunted or some monster lives in it, but because the bad choices developers and homeowners made over the years turned the property from home into a nightmare to inhabit.
It’s incredible how Mike and Denise manage to turn around completely ugly and distasteful interior decorating choices, living space arrangements, and an utterly inadequate sense of storage into heartwarming homes that actually make you want to live there. In each episode, these two head for a house in need of some improvements, turning a shack into a mansion with great budget choices.
Fix My Frankenhouse Episode 2 Recap
Mike and Denise head to Hanover, Massachusetts, and check out a family house home to a family of five. Tim and Siobhan bought the property five years ago, and the space arrangements around it are a mess. It has six staircases, three balconies, and seven different types of flooring. The entire house is a mess to live in because the rooms’ distribution is highly inconvenient as the previous owners built that house with poor judgement. There’s even an indoor balcony overlooking the dining room with its own staircase! After the tour, Denise offers her input on what to do with the rooms that are underutilized. Then it’s Mike’s room to pick which walls will go down.
Once the ideas are laid down, it’s time to talk about the numbers. Siobhan and Tim have a $200,000 budget. They agree and check out the design layout planned for them. The kitchen has a big expansion, making it the center of the heart, th; the backroom will now be the kid’s room with better accommodations and near the sleeping quarters, and the bathroom will be relocated from the entrance to the chambers. Denise and Mike tell the homeowners that the project will take twelve weeks. Siobhan and her husband agree to the terms and the family moves out and hopes to have a new home when they get back.
Refurbishing
Denise has a few setbacks getting Siobhan to pick textures for the walls and ceilings, but after a couple of options, she and her husband make up their minds. Mike gets to work and starts planning out the massive kitchen that will be the heart of the house while Denise and her kids pick tiles for the swimming pool. Denise comments how one of her kids is a “yes man” and another one is a “no man”, that segment is fun because it shows how Denise incorporates her family into the business, giving the sense that their company is a family-owned enterprise.
Weeks go by, and Mike and Denise are done with the kitchen which now features a massive center island, the flooring is now uniform and attractive, the countertops and cabinets have a better disposition for storage optimization, and the home’s entire electrical wiring is upgraded. It’s now the time to show the owners how it ended up, and when Siobhan and her husband arrive with their children, they’re amazed at the new feeling, look, and flow of the house. They are happy that everything went within the budget, and it was a pretty spectacular renovation from what was once a hopeless place that looked like an improvised maze with lots of rooms without any purpose.
